Yesterday, the New York State Senate passed a bill that would require EVERYONE to wear seat belts in the backseat of a vehicle, no matter the age of the passenger.

The current New York State law requires all front seat passengers to wear seat belts, while people under the age of 16 must wear seat belts whether they’re seated in the front or back seats.

The bill was proposed by State Senator David Carlucci of the D-38th District last year.

“The simple fact is that you’re not any safer in the back seat,” said Senator Carlucci on the chamber floor on Tuesday. “So we have to make that message loud and clear by passing this legislation.”

According to AAA (American Automobile Association), you are eight times more likely to be hurt or killed if you're not buckled up.

The bill now moves on to Governor Andrew Cuomo’s desk to either sign or veto.
