Cortland County Health Department was notified today of three additional county residents who have tested positive for COVID-19. This brings the total number of positive cases to 6 in Cortland County.

While the risk to the general public remains low, the Cortland County Health Department is working to identify and contact all those who may have come in contact with the confirmed cases. All confirmed positive cases will be isolated under a Public Health order. The individuals identified as close contacts will be quarantined and monitored by the Health Department for fever and respiratory symptoms.

There are currently 58 members of the community who are not symptomatic and are self-quarantining for the recommended 14 days, with some members of this group linked to the confirmed cases. The Health Department will not release further details about these residents to respect their privacy.

Testing continues at provider sites throughout the region. The Cortland County Health Department does not have testing capabilities at this time. Residents are referred to their own health care provider or testing sites in Ithaca or Syracuse. We understand that results are taking longer to obtain than projected. Persons who have been tested are asked to self-quarantine until they receive results from the testing site. All positive test results will be identified and staff from the County health department will monitor those individuals.

Everyone should be monitoring themselves for symptoms of COVID-19 such as fever, cough, and/or difficulty breathing. If symptoms do develop, stay home and call your doctor for further guidance about testing. If you are elderly, have underlying medical conditions, or are immunocompromised, call your doctor early even if your illness is mild. In an emergency call 911. If you have symptoms and do not have a doctor, call the NYSDOH hotline: 1-888-364-3065 or visit their website https://www.health.ny.gov/diseases/communicable/coronavirus/
