Marathon man arrested for fake $100 bills, narcotics

Jarod S. O'Neill, 32, of Turner Hill Road, Marathon CORTLAND COUNTY SHERIFF'S OFFICE

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office announced this afternoon the arrest of a Marathon man for passing fake $100 bills, possessing narcotics and violating parole.

Jarod S. O’Neill, 32, of Turner Hill Road, offered counterfeit $100 to pay for goods in late March at the Sunoco Gas Station on Route 11 in Polkville and at the McGraw Travel Plaza and Pit Stop just half a mile further south on Route 11, according to police.

After the incident was reported to the Sheriff’s Office on March 26, investigators determined O’Neill had offered the phony cash and started looking for him, a news release notes.

Officers spotted O’Neill walking the next day on Elm Street in Cortland and arrested him, according to the department. Investigators found O’Neill had several other counterfeit bills when he was arrested, as well as a small amount of narcotics, according to Sgt. A. D. Phelps. Phelps declined to state how many fake bills O'Neill had, as well as what type of narcotics O’Neill possessed citing ongoing lab tests.

Police determined O’Neill was also wanted on an arrest warrant for a state parole violation when he was detained, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Information regarding how he is accused of violating parole was unavailable.

O’Neill was remanded to the Cortland County Correctional Facility on $3 cash bail after his arraignment Monday at Central Arraignment inside the jail. He was still in jail as of 3 p.m. today. O’Neill is scheduled to next appear at 9 a.m. on May 15 in Cortlandville Town Court.
