Cortland Weather Outlook: Friday, May 15

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Friday, May 15, 2020:

After a seemingly unending string of cold, snow, and frost, Cortland County is rather suddenly under the gun for a very different type of weather today: severe thunderstorms.

A warm front is lifting through the area this morning with a few scattered showers. These will push north as warm and humid air surges in.

By the early afternoon, temperatures should be pushing into the low and mid 70s under a mix of sun and clouds and a steady southwest wind.

These winds will blow at around 10 mph with gusts reaching 30 mph.

An approaching cold front will trigger showers and thunderstorms over Western New York and the Finger Lakes. These storms should have time to organize and strengthen before arriving in Cortland County sometime around or after 5 PM.

Frequent lightning and damaging winds will be the primary threats, though flash flooding could also become a concern. The hail and tornado threats are minimal, but do exist.

Thunderstorms will quickly move east with just a few scattered showers this evening.
