CPD: Cortland man arrested following reported robbery

This is a press release from the Cortland City Police Department. 

On 07/17/2020, City police arrested Chenor Pena (37) of 55 1/2 Owego Street Cortland, following investigation into a reported robbery that had occurred on 07/15/2020 at around 7:15 PM.

A 40 year old Cortland man reported to police that when he arrived at his Clinton Avenue residence, he was approached by Pena, who he only knew from limited past encounters. The 40 year old man said that Pena asked for a cigarette and followed the man to his apartment.

The man stated that upon arriving at the apartment, Pena struck him in the face. A short struggle ensued and during the scuffle, Pena drew a knife and threatened the man. The man had young children at home and was able to calm Pena and get him away from the home by promising to get him money. Pena agreed to this and walked with the man to a couple of locations, attempting to find a working ATM. The man was ultimately able to withdraw $40.00 from an ATM at NBT bank on Main Street, which he turned over to Pena. The man suffered only minor injuries during the attack and did not seek medical attention.

Pena was located on 07/17/2020 at about 7:10 PM, riding stolen bicycle on Charles Street in the City and taken into custody.

Pena was charged with;

  • Robbery 1st (F)
  • Menacing 2nd (M)
  • Criminal Possession of a weapon 3rd (F)
  • Harassment 2nd (V)
  • Criminal possession of stolen property  5th (M) (bicycle)

Pena was remanded to the CCJ and requested a preliminary hearing on 07/23/2020.
