CPD: Cortland man arrested after burglarizing home in Union St.

Press release from the Cortland City Police Department.

On 07/30/2020 at about 1 PM, City police responded to a reported Burglary in progress at a Union Street home.

The homeowner reported returning to his residence today to find a man who he knew, Alexander J. Hale (24) of 7 Winter Street, Cortland fleeing from inside his home. The homeowner advised officers that he was missing some antique coins, military pins, a set of brass dice and some knives.

Officers began searching the area for Hale, who had fled on foot, leaving his bicycle behind. Officers located Hale crossing through an open grassy area in Beaudry Park off Huntington Street. As officers approached, Hale began performing cartwheels. Hale was taken into custody and later told officers he thought that doing cartwheels made him appear less guilty.

Hale was charged with;

  • Burglary 2nd (F)
  • Petit Larceny (M)

Hale is currently held at CPD awaiting arraignment.
