Press release from the Cortland County Legislature.

As the temperatures dip, The Cortland County Department of Social Services in partnership the Salvation Army and Grace & Holy Spirit Church of Cortland are reminding the Community of the Code Blue Warming Centers that are available.

What is Code Blue?

The Department of social services has a policy called “Code Blue” in place for winter nights when the temperature drops to 32 degrees or below, including wind-chill, between 4:30 PM and 8:00 AM.

The Salvation Army and Grace & Holy Spirit Church will provide warming centers during these periods of extreme cold.

The warming centers are warm safe locations for individuals to seek protection from the frigid temperatures overnight during the cold weather season. This is a free voluntary program that requires no income or geographic eligibility requirements.

Anyone in need of a place to go can walk into a warming center. In addition to a warm place, hot meals will be provided along with several other services including personal care and referrals to counseling.

The Grace and Holy Spirit Center located at 13 Court Street in Cortland will be open Monday through Friday 4:30 PM to 8 PM. The Salvation Army site located at 138 Main Street Cortland will be open Monday Through Friday 8PM to 8AM.

During weekends and Holidays the Grace and Holy Spirit Center will be open 8 AM-8 PM and the Salvation Army site will be open 8 PM – 8 AM.

For more information on the status of centers please call 607-753-9363
