Cortland Weather Outlook: Friday, December 25

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Friday, December 25, 2020:

Our weather will continue to be impacted by the powerful storm system that brought heavy rain and strong winds yesterday and last night.

Temperatures will drop this morning as the system’s cold front passes through. As the front moves, a rapid drop into the 30s will occur with a steadier fall to near 30 degrees this morning.

As this occurs, rain will turn over to an icy mix of freezing rain, sleet, and eventually snow. None of these should accumulate much, but combined with the falling temperatures, they will create treacherous travel conditions for a couple hours this morning.

Travel conditions should improve as precipitation tapers to on and off flurries with a few briefly heavier bursts. However, river levels will continue to rise as runoff flows into the Tioughnioga River.

The river should crest this evening in moderate flood stage, somewhere between 10-12 feet.

Once temperatures reach about 30 degrees, they will remain steady through the afternoon. As the sun sets, temperatures will fall again, though the 20s and into the upper teens by Saturday morning.

On and off snow showers will continue through the afternoon, evening, and overnight hours. A few areas could see an inch or so of accumulation.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Saturday: Snow showers early and again late. Some breaks of sun in between. Morning lows in the upper 10s. Afternoon highs in the mid 20s.

Sunday: Maybe a morning flurry, then some sun before thin clouds build in. Morning lows around 20. Afternoon highs in the low 30s.

Monday: Cloudy with scattered rain and snow showers. Morning lows in the upper 20s. Afternoon highs in the low 40s.

Tuesday: Morning snow showers. Afternoon sun. Morning lows in the upper 10s. Afternoon highs in the low 20s.
