Cortland Weather Outlook: Tuesday, December 29

snow, winter

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Tuesday, December 29, 2020:

Today will look and feel more like winter than any other day this week with lake effect snow, especially through the morning.

Gusty northwest winds will be in place, sending on and off flurries and squalls off Lake Ontario and into our region. Wind speeds will be 10-15 mph with gusts of 30-35 mph.

At some point late in the morning or midday hours, a heavier squall should enter the county from the north as the primary snow band drops south. A quick inch of accumulation will accompany poor visibility and slick travel conditions. Another inch may fall outside of this main band.

The band will weaken and dissipate this afternoon, but flurries could linger until nearly sunset. If the snows taper off sooner, a little sun may poke out late, but this is less likely.

Skies will turn partly cloudy tonight with no additional snowfall.

Temperatures will hold steady in the low and mid 20s throughout the day. A quick drop into the teens and single digits will take place this evening, but temperatures should push back into the mid teens overnight as south winds kick in and clouds increase.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Wednesday: A morning flurry possible. Maybe a little afternoon sun mixing in. Morning lows in the mid 10s. Afternoon highs in the low 30s.

Thursday: Cloudy. Morning rain showers, possibly mixing with some snow. Morning lows near 30. Afternoon highs in the low 30s.

Friday: Cloudy early, then some freezing rain and rain for the afternoon and evening. Morning lows in the upper 10s. Midday highs in the mid 30s.

Saturday: Mostly cloudy with a few rain showers. Morning lows in the mid 30s. Afternoon highs in the mid 40s.
