Cortland Weather Outlook: Thursday, January 28

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Thursday, January 28, 2021:

Our weather will take another step colder today thanks to a cold front that moved through the area last night.

As usual, snow showers off Lake Ontario will be persistent today behind the front with winds out of the northwest. Most of the snow will be light, but it should be steady throughout most of the day.

By sunset, look for new snow accumulation around an inch.

The northwest winds will be blustery with speeds of 10-15 mph and gusts around 30 mph. This will prevent temperatures from rising today, instead holding steady near 15 degrees.

Conditions for lake effect will improve tonight as another push of colder air moves through. Enhancing the already ideal conditions will be a connection to the Georgian Bay off Lake Huron.

This will result in a strong band of snow developing this evening, impacting Cortland County. The band will be moving around, so most areas should see at least some heavy snow.

Even after the primary band moves south, widespread moderate snow will continue through the night as a broader spray of lake effect develops.

Just during the evening and overnight hours, 3-6 inches could fall, especially in the northern and western parts of the county.

Temperatures through the evening will be near 10 degrees before dropping back toward 5 degrees by early Friday morning.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Friday: Lake effect snow showers. Temperatures around 5 degrees throughout the day.

Saturday: Lake effect snow showers. Morning lows near 0. Afternoon highs near 10.

Sunday: Partly cloudy to mostly sunny. Morning lows of -10 to -15. Afternoon highs near 20.

Monday: Partly cloudy. An outside chance for snow late. Morning lows around -5. Afternoon highs near 30.
