Cortland Weather Outlook: Friday, January 29

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Friday, January 29, 2021:

Bitter cold air is moving into the region with gusty winds, producing both lake effect snow and low wind chills. A Winter Weather Advisory and a Wind Chill Advisory are both in effect this morning as a result.

It all starts with the wind, which will be from the northwest at 10-15 mph through much of the day. Gusts will top out around 30 mph.

The wind will continue to bring cold air into the region. Temperatures will only rise a few degrees today, topping out in just the mid single digits.

The cold temperatures and blustery winds will send wind chills below zero, and possibly as low as -20 degrees at times.

The cold winds will also continue to produce lake effect snow. Flurries and squalls will be persistent through the day, with a couple more inches falling on top of what fell last night.

The wind will die down this evening, but the lake snows will keep on flying. Flurries and a few heavier bursts will continue with another inch or two overnight.

The lake effect will keep temperatures locked in the single digits through the overnight.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Saturday: Lake effect snow showers, mostly in the morning. Morning lows in the low single digits. Afternoon highs in the mid teens.

Sunday: Sunshine filtered through thin overcast. Morning lows around -10. Afternoon highs near 20.

Monday: Cloudy. A few snow showers. A small chance for steadier snow. Morning lows around 5. Afternoon highs near 30.

Tuesday: A few snow showers. A small chance for steadier snow. Morning lows in the mid 20s. Afternoon highs near or just above 30.
