Boys Basketball: Homer vs. Cortland

It was what we all expected from this county rivalry game between the Homer Trojans and the Cortland Purple Tigers.

The Tigers were able to pull out a hard-fought 58-45 overtime win at the end.

Both teams started the game off well, with Cortland being up by 5 points (9-14) at the end of the opening quarter.

Cortland went on to take over for the majority of the game, ending the half with a 15-26 lead and the third quarter with a 25-37 lead.

However, the Trojans were not going to make it easy for the Tigers in the final period. Holding Cortland to 4 points in the quarter, while scoring 16 of their own to send the game to overtime.

“In my 9 years of coaching, I'm not sure I've been a part of a game that had such an exciting ending in regulation sending it to overtime,” said Cortland Head Coach Jeremy Milligan. “Both teams made some clutch plays down in the final minute of the game.”

“All season long, we preached that we needed to trust each other, and trust the process,” added Coach Milligan. “Tonight, despite an incredibly gritty fourth quarter performance by the Trojans, our experience and leadership prevailed.”

The Tigers were led by Noah Armstrong with 23 points on the night. Following Armstrong were Tyler Blake with 14 points and Max Gambitta with 11 points.

The Trojans were led by Jarrett Wilbur with 21 points and Jacob Atkins with 12 points.

Despite the tough loss, Homer also recognized their seniors Jarrett Wilbur, Carter Newcomb, and Ben Morenus on Saturday for Senior Night.

Girls Basketball: Homer vs. Cortland

The Homer girls basketball team defeated cortland 59-38 in their last game of the season.

The Homer Trojans got off on the right foot, holding Cortland down to 4 points in the opening quarter, and giving them an 11 point lead. The Trojans would end the half with a 28-14 lead over the Cortland Tigers at the half.

With it being Senior Night on Saturday, the Trojans also recognized their only senior Katlyn Sovocool on the win.

According to Homer Head Coach CJ Kudla, the girls “played their hearts out for her.”

“We bring back a really good group next year, but I would be lying if I said losing Katlyn wasn't a big loss,” added Coach Kudla. “She's been their leader and a lockdown defender for the past four years. We'll figure it out this off-season, but losing a kid like her is always a hard one to come to terms with.”

The Trojans were led by Gracie Patriarco with 22 points on the night. Following Patriarco were Catherine Apker (17 points), Katlyn Sovocool (9 points), and Sarah Sovocool (9 points).

The Tigers were led by Margaret Starr with 14 points and Kirsten Merritt with 9 points.
