NYSP: Driving While Intoxicated and Driving While Impaired by Drugs Arrests in March (Local)

Fifty impaired drivers were removed off the roadways in Troop C during the month of March.  Troop C encompasses Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga and Tompkins counties. 

Local Arrests:

On March 1, 2021 at approximately 1:10 p.m., New York State Police at Homer (Interstate) arrested Thomas Hawkins, age 58 of Syracuse, NY for the misdemeanor of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated.  A trooper was monitoring traffic on Interstate 81 in the town of Cortlandville when Cortland County 911 advised that they received complaints about a vehicle traveling southbound that was being driven erratically.  The trooper was able to spot the vehicle on I-81 (south) in the town of Cortlandville and saw several vehicle and traffic violations.  He initiated a traffic stop.  While the trooper interviewed Hawkins, he observed numerous characteristics associated with alcohol impairment.  After an investigation, Hawkins was arrested.  He was transported to SP Homer where his reportable B.A.C was .20%.  Hawkins issued appearance tickets to the town of Cortlandville court on April 5, 2021. 

On March 18, 2021 at approximately 11:31 a.m., New York State Police at Ithaca arrested Bryan Airel, age 52 of Clay, NY for the misdemeanor of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated.  A trooper was dispatched by Tompkins County 911 to the report of a vehicle being driven erratically on State Route 13 in the town of Dryden.  A trooper observed the vehicle failing to maintain its lane and initiated a traffic stop.  While interviewing Airel, the trooper smelled an odor of an alcohol beverage and asked him to perform standardized field sobriety tests.  Airel was arrested for DWI and transported to SP Ithaca where his reportable B.A.C was .19%.  Airel was issued appearance tickets to the town of Dryden court on May 5, 2021 then released to a sober third party. 

On March 20, 2021 at approximately 9:24 p.m., New York State Police at Homer arrested Brian P. Eggleston, age 40 of Jamesville, NY for the misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated.  A trooper was dispatched by Cortland County 911 to a report of a complaint of an erratic driver on Interstate 81.  The trooper located the described vehicle on I-81 north near exit 10 in the town of Cortlandville and initiated a traffic stop.  While interviewing Eggleston, the trooper smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage and inquired further.  Eggleston was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which he failed and was arrested.  He was transported to SP Homer where his reportable B.A.C was .16%.  Eggleston was issued appearance tickets to the town of Cortlandville court on March 29, 2021 then released to a sober third party.

On March 20, 2021 at approximately 10:00 p.m., New York State Police at Homer arrested William F. Murphy, age 37 of Theresa, NY for the felony Aggravated Unlicensed Operation in the first degree and misdemeanor of Driving While Intoxicated.  A trooper was dispatched by Cortland County 911 to the report of a vehicle driving erratically while traveling north on Interstate 81.  The trooper spotted the vehicle on I-81 in the town of Homer.  He observed it make vehicle and traffic infractions and initiated a traffic stop.  While interviewing Murphy, the trooper detected and odor of an alcoholic beverage.  Murphy was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which he failed and was arrested.  He was transported to SP Homer where his reportable B.A.C was .12%.  Murphy was processed and released on appearance tickets to the town of Homer court on April 20, 2021.

On March 21, 2021 at approximately 3:16 a.m., New York State Police at Homer arrested Robert T. Dunn, age 36 of Elmira, NY for the misdemeanor Driving While Intoxicated.  Troopers were dispatched by Cortland County 911 to the report of a vehicle that went off the roadway off State Route 392 in the town of Virgil.  Troopers found the vehicle on its side.  An investigation at the scene revealed that Dunn was intoxicated.  He was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which he failed and was arrested.  Dunn was transported to SP Homer where his reportable B.A.C was .08%.  He was processed and released on appearance tickets to the town of Virgil court on April 13, 2021 then turned over to a sober party. 

On March 28, 2021 at approximately 8:03 p.m., New York State Police at Homer arrested Deborah M. Grant, age 55 of Port Crane, NY for the misdemeanor of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated.  A trooper was dispatched by Cortland County 911 to McGraw Marathon Road in the town of Marathon for a report of a vehicle that went off the roadway.  Troopers were met at the scene by members of the Marathon Fire Department.  While troopers interviewed Grant, they observed characteristics associated with impairment.  After an investigation, Grant was arrested.  She was transported to SP Homer for processing where her reportable B.A.C .18%.  Grant was released on appearance tickets to the town of Marathon court on May 19, 2021.
