Cortland County High School Sports Game Recaps (April 9th)

Here are some local high school varsity game recaps from Friday’s games:

Cincinnatus Varsity Girls Soccer vs. Stockbridge Valley

The Cincinnatus Lions defeated Stockbridge Valley 6-0 on Friday. 

It was a close first half, with Cincinnatus only finding the back of the net once at the very end of the half to make it 1-0. 

However, the Lions came out in the second half controlling the entire field and scoring 5 additional goals while they were at it to get the win. 

Kyla Sustad led the Lions with a hat-trick (3 goals). Following Sustad were Ariahna Metzler (2 goals) and Deslinn Rutan (1 goal & 1 assist). 

Cincinnatus ended the game with 36 shots and 3 saves; while Stockbridge Valley had 5 shots and 22 saves. 

Marathon Varsity Boys Soccer vs. Lansing

The Marathon Olympians suffered a hard fought 1-0 loss against Lansing on Friday evening, falling to 5-3 on the season. 

It was a scoreless first half with both teams trying to get on the scoreboard. 

However, four minutes into the second half, Lansing’s Conner Walls scored the only goal of the game off an assist from Kyle Reed. 

The Olympians will be looking to get back to their winning ways on Tuesday April 11th, as they play Southern Cayuga for a divisional matchup. 

Marathon Varsity Girls Soccer vs. Southern Cayuga

With only 10 players on the field(normally 11 players play at a time), Marathon played an outstanding game defeating Southern Cayuga with a score of 6-0. 

The Marathon Olympians came out strong, obtaining a 2-0 lead by halftime. Their strong offense would then finish the game off by scoring 4 additional goals in the second half. 

Brooke Tillotson led the way for the Marathon Olympians with 4 goals and 1 assist, one Abby Ensign scored 2 goals, Marissa Allen had 2 assists, and Abby Tallman  had 1 assist as well. 

McGraw Varsity Boys Soccer vs. Madison

The McGraw Golden Eagles defeated Madison 6-0 on the road. 

The Eagles had a great start of the game on Friday, as they would score 4 goals before halftime. Nolan Knickerbocker also made an incredible save from a penalty kick, allowing McGraw to keep a clean sheet (0 goals against). 

McGraw would then score 2 additional goals to get the win. 

“Everything just clicked tonight and the things we have been practicing and working hard on really transpired into the game and was really nice to see,” said McGraw Head Coach Jamey Crumb. “It’s always hard playing at Madison and it’s been a few years since we have won up there.”

Jackson Card ended up being involved in five of six goals for the Eagles, as he scored a hat-trick (3 goals) and had 2 assists. Other scoring leaders of the evening include Nate Stiles (1 goal & 2 assists), Caleb Smith (1 goal), Jackson Pitcher (1 goal), and Skyler Barrows (1 assist). 

McGraw ended the game with 13 shots and 5 saves from Knickerbocker; while Madison had 7 shots and 4 saves. 

McGraw Varsity Girls Soccer vs. Madison

The McGraw Varsity Girls Soccer team lost a tough game by the minimum score of 1-0 against Madison. 

The only goal of the game was scored by Kyleigh Carroll with about 14 minutes left in the first half to give Madison the win. 

McGraw ended the game with 27 shots and 2 saves from Jaiden Cortez; while Madison had 6 shots and 24 saves by Lydia Pisiak.
