Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 11th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Jamesville-Dewitt

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Jamesville-Dewitt for the second day in a row Tuesday evening. 

Just like Monday’s game, it was a close matchup. It all came down to the last inning, with Jamesville-Dewitt only being down 2 runs at the top of the inning. Cortland then finished the game off by scoring 3 additional runs in the inning against Jamesville-Dewitt’s 1 run. 

The Tigers are now 6-0 on the season. 

Tyler Blake led the Tigers offensively with 3 runs. Following Blake were Caden Congdon (2 runs), Max Gambitta (1 run), Adam Minnard (1 run), Caden Albright (1 run), and Kooper Knabe (1 run). 

Tyler Blake also had a great day at the mound, pitching a total of 12 strikeouts. Adam Minnard also threw 4 strikeouts.

Varsity Baseball: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Olympians suffered a tough (2-19) loss against Union Springs. 

Ian Gacek and Zachary Birdsall scored the only two runs for Marathon in the game.

“Ryan Bailey threw a terrific game for Union Springs,” said Marathon Head Coach Bryan Hoyt. “He was in total command all night and we did everything we could just to get the bat on the ball. They also did a great job at the plate. They hit the ball hard and put it in play and we made some mistakes. We didn’t help ourselves in the field. Too many mistakes and if you give a team like that extra outs they will make you pay and they made us pay tonight!”

Union Spring’s Ryan Bailey threw a total of 17 strikeouts from the mound.

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Olympians lost a close match to Union Springs Tuesday afternoon with a score of 195-185. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Skaneateles

The Homer Trojans defeated Skaneateles with a score of 11-8 to keep their unbeaten season alive. The Trojans now hold an overall record of 6-0. 

It was a close game from the beginning, with Homer taking a 6-2 lead before the half. 

Skaneateles outscored Homer 4-3 in the third quarter, but Homer would score another 2 goals in the final quarter to finish the game. 

The Trojans were led by Jake Calabro (5 goals), Jared Mathews (1 goal & 3 assists), Ben Morenus (1 goal & 2 assists), Hunter Rhielman (2 goals), Reid Partis (1 goal), and Logan Swartz (1 goal). 

Homer goalkeeper Collin Perks saved a total of 8 shots in the game as well. 

Varsity Boys Tennis: Cortland vs. Central Square 

The Cortland boys tennis team lost a double-header against Central Square 7-0 & 7-0. 

According to Cortland Head Coach Andrew Starinsky, the team was without first Singles player Daniel Zhang and their third Singles player Henry Storch . This left Cortland with only three active players in the evening. 

Here are the results of the rest of the matches that took place:

  • First Singles: Cortland’s Matt Meagley lost to Central Square’s Ethan Westfall (0-6 & 0-6) and (0-6 & 6-1). .
  • Second Singles: Cortland’s Connor Tasselmyer lost to Central Square’s Kevin Kershner (0-6 & 1-6) and (0-6 & 2-6). 
  • Third Singles: Cortland’s Mike Guido lost to Central Square’s Ryan McAfee (2-6 & 3-6) and (0-6 & 2-6)
