Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 13th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday's events:

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. ESM

The Cortland Purple Tigers improved their undefeated record to 7-0 Thursday evening after defeating ESM (East Syracuse Minoa) with a score of 15-10. 

The Tigers were led offensively by Caden Albright (3 runs), Kooper Knabe (3 runs), Luke Rogoff (2 runs), Andrew Partigianoni (2 runs), Max Gambitta (1 run), Nick Yonta (1 run), Tyler Blake (1 run), Caden Congdon (1 run), and Adam Minnard (1 run). 

Cortland’s Kooper Knabe also pitched 6 strikeouts in the game. Caden Congdon threw 2 strikeouts.

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Union Springs 

The Marathon Lady Olympians lost a tough game against Union Springs with a score of 4-11.

Kaitlyn Mitchell was 2-4 and pitched six innings. 

The Olympians were led offensively by Brie Carter (1 run, Anastasia Cupps (2 runs), and Sam Pendell (1 run). 

“We pitched well and should have been out of the big innings, but we are having trouble making the easy plays,” said Marathon Head Coach Jamie Bush. “We will get a second chance at this one next Friday at Marathon and if we start making the plays, I know we can and we should be ok. If not, it will be a long season for a program that has seen a lot of success before the pandemic shut down.”

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Manlius Pebble Hill

The Homer Trojans improved to 3-0 on the season after taking down Manlius Pebble Hill (MPH) 3-2. 

Here is a breakdown of Thursday’s individual matches:

  • First Singles: Homer’s Spencer Rusyniak defeated MPH’s Anthony Pitts (6-2 & 7-5). 
  • Second Singles: Homer’s Raymond Meng lost to MPH’s Kai Hokanson on three sets (6-4, 6-7 & 6-7). 
  • Third Singles: Homer’s Jake Camp defeated MPH’s Alex Fung in three sets (6-4, 3-6 & 6-3). 
  • First Doubles: Homer’s Nik Kruman and Conor Powers lost to MPH’s Matthew Roberson and Deven Trikka in three sets (6-4, 3-6 & 4-6)
  • Second Doubles: Homer’s Brandon McLaughlin and Elijah Smith won on default. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Tully

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Tully 20-1 at home to improve their overall record to 3-1. 

The Trojans were led by Kloey Roos (6 goals & 2 assists), Camryn Calabro (4 goals & 3 assists), Annika Roos (3 goals & 3 assists), Katlyn Sovocool (1 goal & 3 assists), Sydney O'Donnell (1 goal & 1 assist), Lauren Walling (1 goal), Kayla Miller (1 goal), Leeanna Peck (1 goal), and Hannah Slade (1 goal & 1 assist).

Homer goalkeeper Sarah Sovocool had 3 saves in the game.  

Tully’s only goal was scored by Rachel Daddona in the second half.

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Tully

The Homer Trojans lost their first game of the season against Tully Thursday night with a score of 13-15, bringing them to a 6-1 overall record. 

It was a close game, with the Trojans only being down by 7-8 at the end of the half. Homer was able to keep it close in the second half, but Tully would get away with a 2 goal winning advantage. 

The Trojans were led by Jake Calabro (5 goals), Jared Mathews (2 goals & 3 assists), Ben Morenus (2 goals & 2 assists), Hunter Riehlman (3 goals), and Reid Partis (1 goal & 1 assist). 

Homer goalkeeper Collin Perks had a total of 9 saves.
