Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 18th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Chittenango 

The Homer Trojans defeated Chittenango 7-1. 

Jacob Atkins led the Trojans in runs with 2 runs in the game. Following Atkins were Jed Brazo (1 run), Michael Grant (1 run), Richard Lambrecht/Brycen Coggins (1 run), Joseph Case (1 run), and Ian Gilbert/Ryan Poole (1 run). 

Mitchell Earle also had 3 hits and 3 RBI’s, while Michael Grant had 2 big hits and 1 RBI. 

Jed Brazo had a great game on the mound, throwing a total of 12 strikeouts. 

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

The McGraw Eagles lost a close game to Stockbridge Valley (7-8). 

The Eagles were led offensively by Nolan Knickerbocker (2 runs), Blake Bergey (1 run), Mathew Heath (1 run), Gabriel Kahle (1 run), Michael Levitskiy (1 run), and Nick Sutton (1 run). 

Nate Stile threw 5 strikeouts in the game. 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost a tough game against Stockbridge Valley with a score of 1-16. 

McGraw’s only scoring run came from Lexi Stiles. 

“It was a tough game and there were some lessons learned,” said Mcgraw Head Coach Jessyca Doran. “Megan Stull received the only RBI, and Madison Boyer played well at first and fought to steal some bases. Tough loss, but we’ll get them next time.”

Varsity Softball: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Lady Olympians beat Southern Cayuga 8-2. 

Sam Pendell was 3-4 with a triple in the sixth inning. She also picked up an RBI when Brook Morsey( who was put on base after being hit by a pitch) scored. 

“It was a close game the first three innings, but we opened things up in the fourth,” said Marathon Head Coach Jamie Bush. 

Kassidy VanOrder led off with a triple in the fourth inning. She was then followed that with a hard-earned walk by Abby Layton. Anastasia Cupps hit a 2 RBI single up the middle. 

Brook Tillotson then got an RBI, plating Cupps after she stole second. Morsey then hit a single to plate Tillotson who had a double steal. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Fulton Tuesday night with a score of 14-9

The Tigers were led by Owen Riley who scored 7 goals and recorded 1 assist. Following Riley were Derek Myers (6 assists), Marcus Hines (1 goal & 1 assist), Kaleb Thorhauer (3 goals), Colin Williams (2 goals), and Jaden Fitch (1 goal & 1assist). 

Cortland goalie Tyler Gavitt recorded a total of 12 saves. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. LaFayette

The Homer Trojans lost a tough game against LaFayette on the road (7-17), bringing them down to a 6-2 record. 

The Trojans were led by Jake Calabro (3 goals & 2 assists), Ben Morenus (2 goals), Jared Mathews (1 goal & 1 assist), and Reid Partis (1 goal). 

Homer goalie Collin Perks recorded 6 saves in the game. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Olympians defeated Moravia with a score of 204-220. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins). This win brings Marathon up to a 4-3 record and is now sectional eligible.
