Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (May 20th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Purple Tigers won their second game of the season on senior night against Oswego with a score of 16-4. 

The scoring for Cortland was shared by Hannah Partigianoni (4 goals & 2 assists), Rachel Kline (1 goal), Delia Bair (2 goals), Paige Ludwig (2 goals), Gabby Cranfield (2 goals & 1 assist),  Megan Harrington (2 goals & 1 assist), Kylie Davie (1 goal), Isabella Smith (1 goal), Bridget Riley (1 assist), and Margaret Starr (1 goal & 1 assist). 

Cortland goalie Daina Gutierrez recorded 6 saves in the game. 

The Tigers celebrated 11 seniors on the win: Cordelia Bair, Kylie Davie, Claire Dearie, Daina Gutierrez, Megan Harrington, Rachel Kline, Paige Ludwig, Kadison MacNabb, Hannah Partigianoni, Bridget Riley, Isabella Smith, and Gabriella State. 

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Cortland vs. Oswego

After seeing the girls’ team have a successful senior night, the Cortland boys lacrosse team wanted to come up big and do the same. 

The Tigers ended up defeating Oswego 12-8, as they celebrated senior night. 

“They played with head, heart, and hustle and got the job done,” said Cortland Head Coach Patrick McNerney.

Cortland was led offensively by Kaleb Thorhauer (3 goals & 1assist), Owen Riley (4 goals), Jaden Fitch (1 assist), Collin Williams (1 assist), Marcus Hines (3 goals), Ben McGrath (2 goals & 2 assists), and Derek Myers (1 assist). 

Cortland goalie Tyler Gavitt recored 8 saves in the game. 

Cortland celebrated 11 seniors Thursday night: Noah Armstrong, Jaden Fitch, Tyler Gavitt, Marcus Hines, Christopher MacDuffee, Alexander Musci, Max Queen, Owen Riley, Riley Sabin, Kaleb Thorhauer, and Collin Williams. 

Varsity Baseball: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Tigers defeated Central Square for the second day in a row, with a final score of 5-4. 

It all came down to the bottom of the last inning, as the Tigers were down 4-1. Cortland was able to score 4 runs in the final inning to win the game. 

The final 4 runs from Cortland were scored by Nick Yonta, Tyler Blake, Kooper Knabe, and Luciano Devito. Andrew Partigianoni scored the only other run in the game for the Tigers in the third inning.

This win brings Cortland up to a 10-0 record. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Chittenango

The Homer Trojans defeated Chittenango 13-2. 

The Trojans were led offensively by Jacob Atkins (2 runs), Mitchell Earle (2 runs), Richard Lambrecht (2 runs), Jon Barnes (2 runs), Michael Grant (1 run), Brycen Coggins (1 run), Zander Johnson (1 run), Tanner Douglass (1 run), and Jed Brazo (1 run). 

Homer’s Joseph Case had a great pitching game, throwing a total of 9 strikeouts in six innings. 

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Phoenix

The Lady Trojans won 20-10 against Phoenix.

It started as a close game, but Homer was then able to get away with a 10 run lead by the end of the fifth inning. 

The Trojans were led by several players that had multiple hits including Cece Rappleyea (5 for 6 from the plate, double, grand slam, 2 runs, 9 RBIs), Izzy Read: (3 for 5 from the plate, a double, and 3 runs), Cat Apker (3 for 4 from the plate, 2 doubles, 4 RBIs, and 5 runs), Sara Cargen (2 for 4 from the plate, 3 RBIs, and 4 runs). 

Isabelle Read and Cece Rappleyea combined for a total of 7 strikeouts from the pitching mound. 

Varsity Softball: Cincinnatus vs. Brookfield

The Cincinnatus Lions lost a tough game against Brookfield (4-20). 

Cincinnatus’ only runs were scored by Karies Raymond (1 run), Kiana Guinn (1 run), Phoebe Smith (1 run), and Piper Landers (1 run). 

Karies Raymond also had a homerun and 2 RBIs. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians lost 197-168 against Southern Cayuga (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins). This brings Marathon down to a 4-4 overall record.
