Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (June 1st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Boys Lacrosse: Homer vs. Cortland

The Homer Trojans defeated the Cortland Purple Tigers with a score of 20-8

The Trojans were led offensively by Jake Calabro (5 goals & 1 assist), Jared Mathews (4 goals & 2 assists), Hunter Riehlman (4 goals & 1 assist), Reid Partis (2 goals & 3 assists), Logan Goodman (2 goals), Tucker Gabriel (2 goals), Sam Bieber (1 goal), Ben Morenus (3 assists), Andrew VanPatten (1 assist), and Chris Kierman (1 assist). 

Cortland’s offense was led by Owen Riley (4 goals & 2 assists), Kaleb Thorhauer (2 goals & 1 assist), and Benjamin McGrath (2 goals). 

Homer goalie Collin Perks recorded 10 saves in the game, while Cortland goalie Tyler Gavitt recorded 12 saves. 

With this win, Homer improves to an 8-4 record. Cortland drops to 3-8. 

Varsity Girls Lacrosse: Homer vs. Mexico

Homer’s offense was led by Kloey Roos (9 goals & 2 assists), Camryn Calabro (4 goals & 2 assists), Annika Roos (3 goals & 1 assist), Katlyn Sovocool (2 goals & 4 assists), Leeanna Peck (1 goal & 1 assist),  Sydney O'Donnell (1 goal), Hannah Slade (1 goal), Lauren Walling (3 assists), and  Kayla Miller (1 assist). The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Mexico 21-0

Homer goalie Sarah Sovocool had a slow day at the goal with only 1 save and no goals allowed. 

Varsity Softball: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Lady Eagles defeated Otselic Valley 14-12. 

The Eagles were led in runs by Lexi Stiles (3 runs), Hannah Fitzgerald (2 runs), Hannah Wilson (2 runs), Ella Fish (2 runs), Tehya Long (2 runs), Emily Fish (1 run), and Paige Simmonds (1 run). 

“Lexi Stiles started the game well... getting all 3 outs by striking them out,” said McGraw Head Coach Jessyca Doran. “In the 5th inning Emily Fish started pitching and held OV to only earning 5 runs. Both girls did well tonight.”

“This team is my ‘Come back kids’, '' added Coach Doran. “Never count them out when they are down. We were down the whole game after the first inning and in the 7th inning we decided to wake up our bats and get moving. All the girls did well tonight. I am so proud of them for pulling off the win 14-12.”

Varsity Baseball: McGraw vs. Brookfield

The McGraw Eagles lost 2-6 to Brookfield on Tuesday. 

Both Matthew Heath and Blake Bergey recorded an RBI each in the game. 

“Nate Stiles pitched a solid 5 innings for McGraw, while Blake Bergey did an excellent job coming in and finishing the last two innings,” said McGraw Head Coach Corey Wilson. “Defensively we made some big plays in the field and are making more consistent plays. Brookfield was able to put the ball in the gaps and in the middle of our infield which helped them get runners in scoring position. We did a much better job from the top to the bottom of the order putting the ball in play. Brookfield’s infield did a great job making plays.”

Varsity Softball: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Lady Trojans lost 5-18 against Westhill.

Homer’s offense was led by Catherine Apker (2 for 4 from the plate, 2 runs, & 4 RBI’s), Jenna Henderson (1 for 3 from the plate & 1 RBI), Alex Kellaway (2 for 3 from the plate), Isabelle Read (1 run), Abigail Villnave (1 run), and Morgan Brown (1 run). 

Catherine Apker hit 2 home-runs in the game. 

Varsity Baseball: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Trojans defeated Mexico 14-0. 

The Trojans were led offensively by Jacob Atkins (3 runs), Jed Brazo (3 runs), Ryan Poole (2 runs), Mitchell Earle (2 runs & 1 RBI), Joey Case (1 run & 1 RBI), Richard Lambert (1 run & 1 RBI), Zander Johnson (1 run 3 RBI’s), and Ian Gilbert (1 run & 2 RBI’s).

Jed Brazo threw 3 strikeouts, while Ian Gilbert threw 2 strikeouts from the mound. 

Varsity Softball: Cortland vs. Tully

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close 2-3 game against Tully on Tuesday. 

Cortland’s 2 runs were scored by Mallory Turner and Claire Turner. Aliza McCormick recorded 1 RBI. 

Cortland pitcher Brenna Hogan threw 9 strikeouts in the game.

Varsity Boys Tennis: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Varsity Boys Tennis team defeated Mexico 3-2 on Tuesday. 

Here is a breakdown of Thursday’s matches:

  • First Singles: Homer’s Spencer Rusyniak defeated Mexico’s Jacob Hill (6-2 & 6-2). 
  • Second Singles: Homer’s Raymond Meng lost to Mexico’s Harley Wakeman (5-7 & 1-6). 
  • Third Singles: Homer’s Jake Camp defeated Mexico’s Adam Clark (6-3 & 6-4). 
  • First Doubles: Homer’s Nik Kruman and Conor Powers lost to Mexico’s Eric Hyde and Connor Shaffer (3-6 & 4-6)
  • Second Doubles: Homer’s Brandon McLaughlin and Elijah Smith defeated Mexico’s Lucas Maciejko, Owen Marsden (6-2 & 6-4).
