Varsity Baseball: Homer Upsets #1 Seed South Jefferson in Sectional Semifinals, Cortland loses to CBA

The Homer Trojans and the Cortland Purple Tigers played their Sectional Semifinal games in their respective Sectional Tournaments on Thursday (June 10th). Homer defeated South Jefferson, while Cortland lost to CBA (Christian Brothers Academy). 

Here is a recap of both Semifinal games: 

Homer vs. South Jefferson

The #4 seeded Trojans took down the #1 seeded South Jefferson Spartans on the road with a score of 4-3. 

Homer’s four runs of the game were scored in the first two innings of the game. Their defense was then able to hold the Spartans down to win the game. 

Homer’s offense was led by Joey Case (1 run, 3 RBI’s & 1 home run), Jed Brazo (1 run & 1 RBI), Jacob Atkins (1 run), and Michael Grant (1 run). 

Jed Brazo also had a great game in the pitching mound, throwing a total of 5 strikeouts. 

The Trojans will be taking on #2 seed Camden in the Section III Class B-1 Sectional Finals on Saturday, June 12th. According to the Section III website, the game is scheduled to begin at 4:30pm Damaschke Field

Cortland vs. CBA

The #1 seeded Tigers lost a tough game against #4 seed CBA with a score of 3-6. 

It all came down to the final inning of the game. CBA was down 3-2 in the top of the seventh inning until Mike Schaffer hit a single, bringing home two runners to take the lead. 

CBA went on to score two additional runs in the inning and shutout Cortland with three straight outs at the bottom of the seventh. 

Cortland’s three runs were scored by Kooper Knabe (2 runs) and Max Gambitta (1 run). Andrew Partigianoni recorded 2 RBI’s, while Ethan Johnson recorded 1 RBI. 

Cortland pitcher Caden Congdon threw 6 strikeouts in the game. Tyler Blake added 4 strikeouts to the mix as well.  

The Tigers ended their season with an overall record of 17-3.
