UPDATE 1: New York State Police continue to investigate a fatal hit and run involving a vehicle that struck two bicyclists on Route 26 in Cincinnatus.
One bicyclist did not survive. That person at this time is only being identified as a 67-year-old male of De Ruyter, NY.
A second bicyclist was transported by Cincinnatus ambulance to Upstate Medical Center with non-life-threatening injuries. That person identified as a 67-year-old male of McGraw, NY.
Two other bicyclists were not injured and are identified as a 34-year-old female of Greene, NY and a 64-year-old male of Cincinnatus, NY.
The operator of the vehicle did not stop. The vehicle was ultimately located by a Cortland County Sheriff’s Deputy at an address in the Town of Willet. Investigators continue to conduct interviews with the person believed to have been operating the vehicle.
The investigation is on-going, more will be released when it is available.
State Route 26 was reopened shortly after 3:00 a.m.
Original Release: On June 15, 2021 at approximately 7:26 p.m., New York State Police at Homer responded to a report of a hit and run involving bicyclists that were struck by a vehicle. The incident occurred near the 29-hundred block of Route 26 in the Town of Cincinnatus.
Route 26 is closed between Telephone Road and Taylor Valley Road during the investigation. A detour is in place.
A preliminary investigation at the scene indicates that four bicyclists were on Route 26 when two of the bicyclists were struck by a vehicle. The vehicle did not stop. One person is deceased. A second person was transported by Cincinnatus Ambulance to Upstate Medical Center, their condition is unknown at this time.
Troopers are conducting interviews in the area as the investigation unfolds.
State Police Investigators and members from the Collision Reconstruction Unit are on scene. Troopers are being assisted by Deputies from the Cortland County Sheriff’s Department, Cincinnatus Fire Department and Cincinnatus Ambulance.
