State police release impaired driver report for the month of June

PRESS RELEASE

State Police in Troop C removed 46 impaired drivers from local roadways in the month of June.  Troop C encompasses Broome, Chenango, Cortland, Delaware, Otsego, Tioga and Tompkins Counties. Of the 46, 3 related to Cortland County.

On June 1, 2021 at approximately 10:38 p.m., New York State Police at Homer arrested Richard J. Potter, age 49 of Tully, NY for the misdemeanor of Driving While Impaired by Drugs.  A trooper on State Route 281 in the Town of Cortlandville observed a vehicle failing to maintain its lane and initiated a traffic stop.  While interviewing Potter, the trooper observed impairment.   Potter was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which indicated impairment and he was arrested.  Potter was transported to SP Homer for processing and later released on appearance tickets to the Town of Cortlandville court on August 30, 2021.

On June 3, 2021 at approximately 8:25 p.m., New York State Police at Homer arrested Donald E. Schermerhorn, age 57 of McGraw, NY for the misdemeanor of Driving While Intoxicated.  A trooper on State Route 41 in the Town of Cortlandville observed vehicle and traffic violations and initiated a traffic stop.  When the trooper interviewed Schermerhorn, he observed characteristics commonly associated with alcohol impairment.  Schermerhorn was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which indicated impairment and he was arrested.  He was transported to SP Homer for processing.  Schermerhorn was arraigned before a judge and released on his own recognizance.  He was ordered to appear in the Town of Cortlandville court on July 7, 2021.

On June 12, 2021 at approximately 8:19 p.m., New York State Police a Homer arrested Noah A. Garrett, age 24 of Cary, NC for the felony of Aggravated Driving While Intoxicated (with a prior conviction within 10 years).  A trooper was dispatched to a report of an erratic driver on Interstate 81 in the Town of Preble.  While monitoring traffic, the trooper spotted the described vehicle on I-81 in the Town of Cortlandville and observed the driver make vehicle and traffic infractions.  A traffic stop was initiated, and the trooper smelled an odor of an alcoholic beverage.  Garrett was asked to perform standardized field sobriety tests, which indicated impairment.  He was arrested and transported to SP Homer where his reportable B.A.C was .20%.  Garrett was processed and released on appearance tickets to the Town of Cortlandville court on July 12, 2021.
