Village of Marathon’s discussion on marijuana with the community (video included)

Over a dozen village and town of Marathon residents spoke during the public hearing at a recent village Board of Trustees meeting, in regards to the village looking to opt out of allowing dispensaries and on-site consumption establishments in the area.

Village mayor Bill McGovern said on Monday that a drafted local law is in place to opt the village out of both parts of New York state’s marijuana regulation and tax bill.

A majority of the residents spoke out against the village potentially seeking to opt out. The residents had a mix of reasons as to why it would be a benefit to allow dispensaries and on-site consumption, including increased sales tax revenue, access to legal marijuana in the village and it being an aid to overall mental health.

Once the public hearing wrapped up, McGovern said the topic will be further discussed at the Board of Trustees’ meeting on Wednesday, Aug. 18. A final decision in regards to the local law could be made during the Aug. 18 meeting as well, he added.
