Cortland Weather Outlook: Wednesday, August 18

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Wednesday, August 18, 2021:

A flash flood watch is in effect today as the remains of Tropical Storm Fred move into the area with potentially heavy rain.

Rain out ahead of Fred will be in the area much of the day. Much of this rain will be lighter, but some heavier downpours are not out of the question.

The heaviest rain associated with Fred will move in this evening. Rainfall rates over an inch per hour will be possible for several hours. This will bring the potential for localized flooding with rainfall totals of 1-3 inches likely, but with locally even higher amounts possible.

Winds will be from the southeast at around 5 mph much of the day. This evening, as Fred approaches, winds will turn to the east and increase to 10-15 mph. A few gusts over 30 mph will be possible if the center of Fred passes nearby or overhead.

The air will be tropical throughout the day, with highs in the mid 70s and dewpoints just a couple degrees lower. After sunset, temperatures will remain near or just under 70 degrees.

Thursday: Morning rain tapers to showers. Morning lows in the upper 60s. Afternoon highs in the mid 70s.

Friday: A few more scattered showers. Morning lows in the mid 60s. Afternoon highs in the upper 70s.

Saturday: Sun, clouds, and some scattered showers. Morning lows in the mid 60s. Afternoon highs in the upper 70s.

Sunday: Sun, clouds, and some scattered showers. Morning lows in the mid 60s. Afternoon highs near 80.
