A city man was arrested by Cortland police at 5:33 a.m. Wednesday following a robbery at knifepoint near the intersection of Duane and Squires Street.
According to a city police report, Brandon L. McGregor, 33, of McLean Road in Cortland, wore a mask and wielded a pocket knife when he attacked a 30-year old man.
McGregor has been charged with first-degree robbery and third-degree criminal possession of a weapon (both felonies), and second-degree menacing and petit larceny (each a misdemeanor).
The victim noted that he was meeting with a woman to go smoke crystal methamphetamine when he was approached by a masked McGregor, the report stated.
McGregor, while pointing the knife at the victim, demanded the man “surrender the contents of his pockets and his backpack” to McGregor, the report said.
The victim then said a fight between him and McGregor ensued. The scuffle was brief, but McGregor managed to snatch the man’s backpack and escape.
City police found McGregor a short distance away from the Duane-Squires Street intersection. McGregor was still in possession of the backpack and the knife he used to rob the victim.
The incident is currently under investigation. McGregor was arraigned in city court Wednesday afternoon. He is being held with bail at $250, with $500 in insurance bonds.
McGregor’s next city court date is scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 26 at 10:30 a.m.
