Cortland Weather Outlook: Sunday, August 22

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Sunday, August 22, 2021:

All eyes will be on Hurricane Henri today as it makes landfall in southern New England and spreads inland toward our region.

For most of the daytime hours, it will be cloudy but dry with Henri still well to the southeast.

The first chances for rain will come during the mid to late afternoon. It is possible, though uncertain, that a band of showers and storms may develop on the fringe edge of Henri.

Should these develop over Cortland County, they could lead to heavy rain and localized flooding issues.

If an organized band does not develop, there will still be a chance for a few scattered showers here or there. These could have some brief downpours, but probably would not cause any flooding.

Showers will become increasingly possible during the nighttime hours. Again, though, flooding should not be much of a concern with these nighttime showers. The steadier, heavy rain from Henri should remain east of the region.

With the center of Henri to the southeast much of the day, our winds will be from the north. The wind will not be strong with speeds of just 5-10 mph. The wind will turn to the northwest and increase slightly to around 10 mph this evening.

High temperatures will once again stick to the upper 70s thanks to the thick clouds. It will remain plenty humid with dewpoints around 70 throughout the day. Evening temperatures will fall to about 70 and stick there through the overnight.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Monday: Showers likely in the morning. Possible some afternoon thundery downpours. Morning lows near 70. Afternoon highs in the upper 70s.

Tuesday: More sun than clouds. Morning lows in the mid 60s. Afternoon highs in the low 80s.

Wednesday: Sun and clouds. Maybe a late shower. Morning lows in the mid 60s. Afternoon highs in the mid 80s.

Thursday: A few scattered showers and storms. Morning lows in the upper 60s. Afternoon highs in the mid 80s.
