Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 7th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: McGraw vs. Madison

The McGraw Lady Eagles are now 2-0 after defeating Madison with a score of 4-0. 

All of McGraw’s goals were scored in the second half of the game.

McGraw’s offense was led by Andrea May (2 goals & 1 assist), Morgan Brown (1 goal & 1 assist), Myranda Murray (1 goal), and Hannah Wilson (1 assist). 

Heather Magee made a total of 4 saves at goal during the game for the Eagles, while Cameryn Stanfield recorded 8 saves for Madison. 

“Both teams had good chances in the first half,” said McGraw Head Coach Sara Yonta. “Andrea May, Morgan Brown, and Myranda Murray generated many scoring opportunities in transition. On the defensive side, Jaiden Cortez and Alyvia Bishop played well and Heather Magee made some great saves to get a shutout.”

The Eagles will take on a strong Cincinnatus team on Friday, September 10th at home for an exciting County rivalry matchup.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Stockbridge Valley

The Cincinnatus Lions took down Stockbridge Valley 11-1 on Tuesday, improving their record to 2-0. 

The Lion’s offense was led by Kyla Sustad (6 goals & 1 assist), Jarisa Temple (3 goals & 1 assist), Madelyn Pittsley (1 goal), and Cassia Schuyler (1 goal). 

Gabriella Taylor had 4 saves, while Cortney Scott had 1 save for the Lions. 

Cincinnatus will take on McGraw on Friday, September 10th on the road.

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Madison

The McGraw Eagles took down Madison 6-1 on Tuesday, in order to improve to a 1-1 record. 

McGraw was led offensively by Jackson Card (4 goals & 1 assist), Nate Stiles (1 goal), Jackson Pitcher (1 goal), Bryce Stockton (1 assist), and Jaydon Bassett (1 assists). 

Madison’s 1 goal was scored by Quinton Moon, assisted by Kyle Peavy. 

McGraw goalkeeper Nolan Knickerbocker recorded 8 saves in the game, while Madison’s keeper Anthony Dodge made 11 saves. 

“We had opportunities early and often and should have doubled our first half score,” said McGraw Head Coach Jamey Crumb. “We were able to get to the end-line creating 13 corner kicks and finally put some away in the second half. Madison is usually a very physical team and they are just young but played well.”

Up next, the Eagles will play at the DCS Booster Club Boys Varsity Kick-Off Tournament this weekend in DeRuyter (Friday & Saturday). Games start at 3pm on Friday.

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Olympians improved their record to 1-1 after beating Groton with a score of 4-0 at home. 

Marathon’s offense was led by Braeden Morrison and Kaiden Cornell, as each of them scored 2 goals and recorded 1 assist. 

Julian Spizzirri had 3 saves, while Jacob Byron had 1 save for the Olympians at goal. 

Groton goalkeeper Lucas Darling recorded 7 saves in the game. 

The Olympians will take on Watkins Glen Central at home on Friday, September 10th at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Trojans lost a tough game against Mexico with a score of 1-2 at home. 

Homer's goal was scored in the first half by Lance Heyer, assisted by Landon Aiken. 

Mexico’s offense was led by Connor Dubois (1 goal), Evan Caroccio (1 goal), and Carter Jock (1 assist). 

Homer goalkeeper Brayden Fox recorded a total of 11 saves in the game, while Mexico’s goalkeeper had 6 saves. 

The now 1-1 Trojans will be back in action on Tuesday, September 14th against Christian Brothers Academy on the road at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. Greene 

The Cortland Purple Tigers improved their record to 2-0 after defeating Greene with a score of 3-0 at home. 

Cortland’s offense was led by Derek Myers (1 goal), Max Gambitta (1 goal), Jack Phelan (1 goal), Dmytro Onyshchuk (1 assist), and David Kelchner (1 goal). 

Cortland goalie Scott Hourigan made 5 saves in the game. Greene’s goalkeeper Jesse Ledford also recorded 5 saves. 

Up next, the Purple Tigers will be participating in the DCS Booster Club Boys Varsity Kick-Off Tournament in DeRuyter this weekend (Friday & Saturday). Games start at 3pm on Friday.
