Cortland Weather Outlook: Wednesday, September 8

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Wednesday, September 8, 2021:

A cold front will move into the area today with showers and thunderstorms this afternoon.

Some sunshine will be possible through the morning hours, but clouds will be on the increase as the front slowly tracks eastward. A stray morning shower cannot be totally ruled out but is unlikely.

A slow moving band of rain will move in from the west sometime in the 2-5 PM timeframe. The more delayed this band is, the better the chance for thunderstorms to develop along the leading edge.

If thunderstorms do manage to develop before the rain arrives, some strong winds, lightning, and heavy downpours will be possible.

Once the rain moves in, it should take around two or three hours for it to move east and end. Areas of fog and a few stray showers will be possible this evening and through the overnight.

Ahead of the front, winds will be from the south-southwest at 10-15 mph. Top non-thunderstorm gusts could reach as high as 35 mph. Following the front, the wind will drop to around 5 mph with a west-southwesterly direction.

Temperatures will push into the mid and upper 70s by the early afternoon. The longer the rain holds off, the higher the temperature will climb.

In the immediate aftermath of the rain, temperatures will be down into the mid 60s. There probably will not be much time for the temperature to recover before the sun sets and temperatures fall back to the upper 50s overnight.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Thursday: Fog and a little sun early. Then, mostly cloudy with scattered showers. Morning lows in the upper 50s. Afternoon highs in the low 70s.

Friday: Cloudy with a few more showers until some late clearing. Morning lows in the mid 50s. Afternoon highs in the mid 60s.

Saturday: Sun and clouds. Morning lows near 50. Afternoon highs near 70.

Sunday: Partly cloudy. Maybe a shower. Morning lows in the mid 50s. Afternoon highs in the mid 70s.
