Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 8th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday's events:

Varsity Volleyball: Homer vs. Cortland

The Homer Trojans defeated Cortland in three straight sets in a County rivalry game on Wednesday. 

Homer was led by Kloey Roos (8 aces, 3 kills & 13 digs), Mya Updyke (10 assists), and Mallory Douglass (9 digs). 

The Cortland Tigers were led by Marissa Parzynski (2 aces, 4 kills & 2 digs), Sarah David-Howard (12 digs), and Andrea West (5 assists). 

Up next, Homer will go against Institute of Technology at Syracuse on the road Friday (September 10th) at 6pm; while Cortland takes on Fulton on the road on Tuesday (September 14th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. Weedsport

The Homer Trojans improved their record to 2-0 on Wednesday after defeating Weedsport with a close score of 2-1 at home. 

Homer’s offense was led by Morgan Brown (1 goal), Carley Calabro (1 goal), Sara Cargen (1 assist), and Molly McMasters (1 assist). 

Weedsport’s only goal was scored by Madison Stock, assisted by Isabella Petrus. 

Homer goalie Emily Daniels recorded a total of 9 saves in the game, while Weedsport’s goalie Amariah Davis had 8 saves. 

The Trojans are now looking forward to improving their overall record, as they take on Auburn at Homer today (September 9th) at 5:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Purple Tigers suffered a heartbreaking 0-1 loss against Central Square at home. 

“We moved the ball really well during the first 5-10 minutes of the game,” said Cortland Head Coach Ilona Ryon. “Then we started playing the ball into space and giving up possession of the ball.”

With about 5 minutes left in the game, Central Square’s Ryan Colton scored the winning goal off an assist from Emma Dempsey. 

Lauren Mott recorded 6 saves for Cortland at goal getting carded, being unable to come back in the game. Claire Turner had an additional 2 saves for Cortland. 

The now 1-2 overall Tigers will take on Hannibal on the road this Friday (September 10th) at 5pm.
