Cortland County organizations and first responders are honoring those lost during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks in the United States 20 years ago and the ensuing conflicts in the Middle East.

Here are some of the events planned for the weekend:

City of Cortland 9/11 20th Anniversary Memorial

Saturday at 8 a.m. at the 9/11 Memorial at Courthouse Park

The Cortland Police Department is set to host a ceremony at the 9/11 Memorial on Courthouse Park starting at 8 a.m. on Saturday. On their social media pages, the police department also invited residents to participate in a cornhole tournament at the Shipwreck Amusements mini-golf course. The tournament, according to organizers, will benefit the 9/11 Memorial Foundation.

Village of Homer 9/11 20th Anniversary Memorial

Saturday at 8:30 a.m. at the 9/11 Memorial next to the Homer Fire Department

The ceremony will start at 8:30 a.m. with a raising of the American flag by members of the Homer fire and police departments. The village of Homer and the Homer American Legion, along with members of the Cortlandville Fire Department, will also be part of the event.

“Sept. 11, 2021, marks the 20th anniversary of the attacks on this country that

led to the deaths of first responders and thousands of Americans and eventually the

war on terror,” said Homer police chief Robert Pitman and Homer fire chief Steven Hayes in a joint release.

First responders also mentioned that South Main Street along the intersection of Central Park Place and Albany Street will be closed starting at 8:15 a.m.

Central New York Living History Center

Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The CNY Living History Center in the town of Cortlandville will host a four-speaker series on Saturday.

“All the speakers will be people directly impacted by the events of 9/11,” said CNY Living History Center executive director Cindy Stoker.

Stoker said holding remembrance events is important as a study of history.

“It is important to remember those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. It is important to honor those that have served,” she added.

United Methodist Church 9/11 Service of Remembrance

Saturday at 9 a.m. at 30 Homer Ave., Cortland

“Remembering those lost and those we continue to lose,” reads the event’s Facebook page.
