Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 14th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Field Hockey: Homer vs. ESM

The Homer Varsity Field Hockey team took down ESM (East Syracuse Minoa) on Tuesday with a score of 3-1. 

Homer’s offense was led by Sara Cargen (2 goals) and Molly McMasters (1 goal). 

Emily Daniels made a total of 10 saves at goal for Homer. 

Homer, now 3-2 overall, will play against Port Byron at home on Thursday (September 16th) at 5:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. Oswego

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Oswego at home with a score of 3-1 to improve to a 4-1 record. 

Cortland’s offense was led by Max Gambitta (1 goal & 1 assist), Dmytro Onyshchuk (1 goal), Dennis Topchiy (1 goal), and Caden Albright (1 assist).  

Oswego’s only goal was scored by Clay Kennedy. 

Cortland goalkeeper Scott Hourigan made 2 saves in the game, while Oswego’s keeper Preston Norfleet recorded 8 saves. 

The Tigers will play Fowler on the road on Wednesday (September 15th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. CBA

The Homer Trojans lost a difficult game against CBA (Christian Brothers Academy) on the road with a score of 1-6. This loss brings Homer down to a 1-2 overall record. 

Homer’s only goal was scored by Adam Karam (assisted by Lance Heyer) in the second half of the game. 

CBA’s offense was led by Will Harrigan (2 goals), Connor Morgia (1 goal & 1 assist), Bruce Broadwell (1 goal), Jack Griffith (1 goal), John Masinde (1 goal), Ben Carrick (2 assists), Aiden Duggan (1 assist), Andrew Kohlbrenner (1 assist), and Luck Delorenzo (1 assist). 

Evan Butts made a total of 6 saves, while Braydon Fox made 5 saves for the Trojans at goal.

CBA’s keeper Ryan Petrie recorded 5 saves in the game. 

Up next, the Trojans will play against Phoenix on Thursday (September 16th) at 7pm on the road. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Southern Cayuga

The Marathon Olympians tied 0-0 against Southern Cayuga on Tuesday. 

According to Marathon Head Coach Chip Stewart, “the game was played in the midfield as both teams had very limited shots.”

Marathon ended the game with a total of 7 shots, while Cayuga had 8 shots. 

Julian Spizzirri recorded 3 saves, and Jacob Byron made 1 save for the Olympians at goal. 

Southern Cayuga’s goalkeeper Brandon Vanacore made 2 saves. 

Marathon, now 2-1-1 on the season, will host Union Springs/Port Byron on Thursday (September 16th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Stockbridge Valley

McGraw’s only goal was scored by Nathan Stiles in the second half of the game. The McGraw Eagles lost to Stockbridge Valley with a score of 1-2 at home. 

Stockbridge Valley’s offense was led by Rhiley Worlock (1 goal), Charlie Cross (1 goal), Evan Baker (1 assist), and Riley LaLonde (1 assist). 

McGraw goalkeeper Nolan Knickerbocker recorded a total of 18 saves in the game, while Stockbridge Valley’s goalie Braden Renner made 7 saves. 

“This was our fourth game in five days and my guys are tired,” said McGraw Head Coach Jamey Crumb. “I don’t want to make excuses for them because we still expect to compete, but it was noticeable tonight.” 

“We created a lot of chances in the second half, many coming off corner kicks and had some great opportunities we just couldn’t put it away,” added Coach Crumb. 

The Eagles, now 2-4 overall, will play Norwich on Saturday (September 18th) at 2pm on the road. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Otselic Valley

The Cincinnatus Lions extended their unbeaten streak to 5-0 after taking down Otselic Valley with a score of 13-1. 

Cincinnatus’ offense was led by Cason Stafford (4 goals & 3 assists), Jordan Larrabee (2 goals & 2 assists), Dominick Landers (2 goals & 1 assist), Scott Schuyler (2 goals & 1 assist), Tyler Liddle (1 goal), Trevor Shevalier (1 goal), Canden Stafford (1 goal), Kooper Vosburg (1 assist), Jack Stafford (1 assist), Koda Temple (1 assist), and Caleb Baker (1 assist). 

Owen Davis scored Otselic Valley’s only goal of the game. 

The Lions will play a strong DeRuyter team on the road this Friday (September 17th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Otselic Valley

 The Cincinnatus varsity girls soccer team shut out Otselic Valley 11-0 to improve to a 4-0 overall record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Kyla Sustad (5 goals & 3 assists), Mandi Waltz (3 goals & 1 assist), Cassia Schuyler (1 goal & 1 assist), Ava Larrabee (1 goal & 1 assist), Caitlin Standish (1 goal), Jarisa Temple (1 assist), Peyton Stith (1 assist), and Kaedence Latta (1 assist). 

Otselic Valley’s goalkeeper Cassidy Waltz made a total of 15 saves in the game.

Cincinnatus will host DeRuyter on Friday (September 17th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Homer vs. Cortland

The Homer Trojans defeated the Cortland Purple Tigers after a close County rivalry matchup with a score of 206-207. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Cortland vs. Fulton

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost a tough game against Fulton in three sets. 

Cortland was led by Molly Steve (5 kills, 3 assists & 3 digs), Andrea West (1 ace, 3 kills & 9 digs), and Kristin Rowland (11 digs). 

Fulton was led by Natalie Frost (3 aces, 9 kills & 10 digs) and Joann Levea (9 digs). 

The now 0-2 Purple Tigers will look forward to taking on Auburn at home on Friday (September 17th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. Solvay

The Homer Lady Trojans lost in three sets against Solvay at home on Tuesday. This was Homer’s first loss of the season, bringing them down to a 3-1 record. 

The Lady Trojans were led offensively by Kloey Roos (10 kills), Mya Updyke (12 assists & 6 digs), and Mallory Douglass (13 digs). 

Homer will look towards getting back on their winning ways, as they take on Marcellus on the road on Thursday (September 16th) at 6:30pm.
