Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 17th & 18th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s and Saturday’s events:

Friday (September 17th)

Varsity Football: Homer vs. VVS

The Homer Trojans improved to a 2-0 record after defeating VVS (Vernon-Verona-Sherrill) on Friday with a score of 30-21. 

Homer’s points were scored by Will Dady (1 receiving touchdown), Logan Peck (1 kickoff return touchdown & 1 rushing touchdown), and Sam Sorenson (1 rushing touchdown). Quarterback Jake Calabro threw 1 touchdown in the game. 

Peck also had a total of 153 rushing yards in the game. 

Homer’s defense was led by Damani Durham (2 interceptions) & Hunter Riehlman (1 interception)

Up next, the Trojans will take on ITC (Institute of Technology Central, Syracuse) at home on Friday (September 24th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. West Genesee

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a tough game against West Genesee with a score of 1-5. The Trojans are now 3-4 overall. 

Homer’s only goal was scored by Catherine Apker in the second half. 

Apker also made a total of 10 saves at goal, while Alex Kellaway made 9 saves for the Trojans. 

Homer will play CBA (Christian Brothers Academy) at home on Tuesday (September 21st) at 7pm.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. DeRuyter

The Cincinnatus Lions took down DeRuyter with a score of 10-1 to keep their undefeated record intact. The Lions are now 5-0 on the season. 

Cincinnatus’ offense was led by Kyla Sustad (4 goals & 3 assists), Ava Larrabee (2 goals & 1 assist), Cassia Schuyler (2 goals), Jarisa Temple (1 goal & 1 assist), Peyton Stith (1 goal). 

Deruyter’s only goal was scored by Keely Worlock (assisted by Amaya Rounsaville) in the first half. 

The Lions' next game was against Norwich on Saturday (September 18th). See below for a recap on that game.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Moravia

The Marathon Lady Olympians won their third straight game on Friday against Moravia with a score of 8-0 in order to improve to a 4-1 record. 

The Olympians were led by ​​Delta Barber (3 goals), Anna Hoyt (1 goal & 2 assists), Brooke Tillotson (1 goal & 1 assist), Addison Oram (1 goal), Paige Hurlburt (1 goal), Breya VanDee (1 goal), and Marissa Allen (1 assist).

Up next, Marathon will hit the road, as they play Whitney Point Senior on Monday (September 20th). 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. DeRuyter

The Cincinnatus Lions beat DeRuyter 5-1 on Friday, improving to an unbeaten 6-0 overall record. 

The Lions were led by Scott Schuyler (3 goals), Cason Stafford (2 goals & 2 assists), and Dominick Landers (2 assists). 

DeRuyter’s goal was scored in the second half by Cameron Daley (assisted by Gavin Richardson). 

Cincinnatus will play Madison at home on Wednesday (September 22nd) at 4:30pm. 

Saturday (September 18th)

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Norwich

The McGraw Eagles defeated Norwich 6-1 to improve to a 3-4 overall record on Saturday. 

The Eagles were led by Nate Stiles (3 goals & 2 assists), Nolan Knickerbocker (1 goal & 1 assist), Jaydon Bassett (1 goal), Ryan Parks (1 goal), and Nick West (1 assist). 

McGraw goalkeeper Gabe Kahle made a total of 9 saves in the game. 

McGraw’s next game is against DeRuyter at home on Monday (September 20th) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Norwich

The Cincinnatus Lions improved to a 6-0 overall record after taking down Norwich with a score of 3-1. 

The Lions were led by Kyla Sustad who scored a hat-trick (3 goals) and Peyton Stith (1 assist). 

Norwich’s goal was scored by Emily Evans (assisted by Sarah Davis). 

Cincinnatus will look to maintain their undefeated record, as they take on Madison at 4:30pm on Wednesday (September 22nd). 

Varsity Cross Country: Cortland vs. Multiple Schools

The Cortland boys and girls varsity cross country teams competed in the McDaniel-Baxter XC Invitational this past weekend. 

Here are some highlights of the meet: 

Boys

  • Jared Valentin placed 5th on his race and ended 33rd overall with a 5 kilometer time of 17:23.8
  • Joe Cataldo placed 25th on his race and ended 115th overall with a 5 kilometer time of 18:45.7
  • Lucas Canzano placed 38th on his race and ended 181st overall with a 5 kilometer time of 19:23.3

Girls:

  • Ruby Mullally placed 84th on her race and ended 393rd overall with a 5 kilometer time of 29:28.4
  • Alexis Brown placed 90th on her race and ended 417th overall with a 5 kilometer time of 31:24.3
  • Emma Gates placed 96th on her race and ended 450th overall with a 5 kilometer time of 38:25.5
