Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 22nd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Wednesday’s  events:

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus Lions shutout Madison 9-0 in order to improve their undefeated overall record to 7-0. 

The Lions were led by Scott Schuyler (4 goals & 2 assists), Cason Stafford (3 goals & 4 assists), Dominick Landers (1 goal), Jordan Larrabee (1 goals), Tyler Liddle (2 assists), Mason Walker (1 assist). 

Cincinnatus goalkeeper Kooper Vosburg made 10 saves in the game. 

The Lions will play against McGraw in their annual rivalry game at SUNY Cortland on Saturday (September 25th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Golden Eagles took down Otselic Valley with a score of 2-0 in order to improve to a 3-5 overall record. 

The Eagles’ goals were scored by Skyler Barrows (assisted by Nolan Knickerbocker) and Ryan Parks (assisted by Nick Sutton). 

“We finally got some starters back (Ben and Jackson Pitcher) who were out due to injury and it allowed us to play a little more offensive minded and could move some players around,” said McGraw Head Coach Jamie Crumb. “One of those moves was putting Skyler on the wing to use his speed to the endline and it worked out well for us the entire game. I want to recognize our defense for fighting strong and fighting for the shutout. We are going to need different guys to keep stepping up moving forward and it was nice to see strong play from others tonight.”

Up next, McGraw will take on Cincinnatus for their annual rivalry game at SUNY Cortland on Saturday (September 25th). The game is scheduled to kickoff at 5pm.  

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Groton

The Marathon Lady Olympians beat Groton 5-0 on Wednesday. With this win, Marathon now holds a 7-1 overall record. 

The Olympians were led by Delta Barber (3 goals), Marissa Allen (1 goal), Abbie Ensign (1 goal), and Paige Hurlburt (2 assists). 

“We played a complete team game today, controlled the ball offensively and did not give up anything on defense,” said Marathon Head Coach Elizabeth Duncan. “This is our 5th straight shutout and that is an attest to our defense and midfield playing strong over the last 2 weeks.”

Marathon’s next challenge will be Union Springs, as they take them on at home on Thursday (September 23rd) at 5pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Lady Eagles tied a close game against Otselic Valley with a score of 2-2 after overtime. 

McGraw’s goals were scored by Andrea May and Tehya Long. Heather Magee recorded a total of 8 saves at goal for the Eagles. 

Otselic Valley’s goals were scored by Rachel Loomis and Katie Kenyon. 

McGraw’s next game will be against Cincinnatus for their annual rivalry game at SUNY Cortland on Saturday (September 25th) at 7pm.  

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Madison

The Cincinnatus varsity girls soccer team improved their undefeated record to 7-0 after defeating Madison with a score of 3-0 on the road. 

Cincinnatus’ offense was led by Kyla Sustad (3 goals), Madelyn Pittsley (1 assist), and Ava Larrabee (1 assist). 

Cincinnatus will take on Cooperstown on Friday (September 24th) on the road at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Field Hockey: Homer vs. Gato-Meridian

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Gato-Meridian 8-1 in order to improve their overall record to 4-5. 

Homer’s offense was led by Morgan Brown (4 goals), Carley Calabro (1 goal & 1 assist), Sara Cargen (1 goal), Carly Gallow (1 goal), Fiona Hartnett (1 goal), Molly McMasters (1 assist), Isabelle Woodward (1 assist), Leah Bouwens (1 assist). 

Homer goalie Emily Daniels made 6 saves in the game. 

Homer will take on Weedsport on Friday (September 24th) at 4:30pm on the road. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Cortland vs. Jamesville-Dewitt

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close matchup against Jamesville-Dewitt on the road with a score of 213-196. (Reminder: Lowest score in golf wins).
