Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 23rd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Football: Cortland vs. Westhill

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a tough game against Westhill with a score of 12-36. This brings Cortland’s record to 0-3. 

Cortland’s touchdowns were scored by Ryan Kline (rushing touchdown) and Gage Burlingame (rushing touchdown). 

After obtaining a 12-0 lead in the second quarter, Westhill made a serious comeback to beat the Tigers at home. Westhill left Cortland scoreless in the second half. 

Cortland’s next game will be at home against ITC (Institute of Technology, Syracuse) on Friday (October 1st). The game is scheduled to kickoff at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Chittenango

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Chittenango with a score of 2-1 at home on Thursday. The Trojans are now 5-4 on the season. 

Both of Homer’s goals were scored in the second half by Gracie Patriarco. Patriarco’s goals were assisted by Sarah Sovocool and Catherine Apker. 

Apker also made a total of 14 saves in the game. 

Chittenango’s only goal was scored by Cara Kielbasa (assisted by Maryanna Garcia). 

Homer will look to keep improving their record, as they take on Skaneateles at home on Tuesday (September 28th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Jordan-Elbridge

The Homer Trojans shutout Jordan-Elbridge on the road with a score of 3-0 in order to improve to a 2-5 record. 

Homer’s offense was led by Brayden Fox (2 goals), Adam Karam (1 goal & 1 assist), and Lance Heyer (1 assist). 

Homer goalkeeper Evan Butts made 5 saves in the game. 

The Trojans will travel to play against Manlius Pebble Hill on Friday (September 24th) at 4:30pm.

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a tough game to Central Square with a score of 0-4 on Thursday. 

Cortland goalkeeper Scott Hourigan made 10 saves in the game. 

Central Square’s goals were scored by Tyler Colton (3 goals) and Jacob Pierson (1 goal). 

With this loss, the Tigers are now 4-4 overall. 

The Tigers will look to put this game behind them, as they take on Auburn at home on Tuesday (September 28th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Cortland vs. Living World Academy

The Cortland Lady Tigers defeated Living World Academy in four sets on Thursday. 

Cortland was led by Emma Hutchings (4 aces, 11 kills & 7 digs), Aliza McCormick (5 aces, 6 kills & 19 digs), and Molly Steve (20 assists, 1 kill & 3 digs). 

With this win, Cortland is now 3-2 overall.

Up next, Cortland will host Jamesville-Dewitt on Friday (September 24th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Lady Trojans lost in four sets to Westhill, bringing them down to a 5-3 overall record. 

The Trojans were led by Mya Updyke (13 assists, 3 aces & 1 kill), Kloey Roos (5 kills, 2 aces & 8 digs), and Mallory Douglass (12 digs). 

Westhill was led by Alison Lancette (18 kills) and Ava Baty (36 assists). 

The Trojans will look to turn things around, as they hit the road to play Mexico on Tuesday (September 28th) at 6pm.
