Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (September 30th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Lady Trojans tied 2-2 against Mexico on Thursday. With this tie, Homer’s record is now 5-5-1. 

Homer goalkeeper Catherine Apker had an impressive 92.9% saving rate, after saving 26 out of 28 shots for Homer. 

Gracie Patriarco scored both of Homer’s goals on the night. Her goals were assisted by Elena Barrett and Catherine Apker. 

The Trojan’s next game will be against Hannibal at home on Tuesday (October 5th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Fulton

The Cortland Lady Tigers obtained their first home win of the season against Fulton with a score of 2-1 in double-overtime. This win brings Cortland to a 4-3 record. 

According to Cortland Head Coach Ilona Ryon, the Tigers “controlled most of the possession of the ball, but in the final third we turned over the ball with inaccurate passes or trying to pass right up the middle through traffic.”

Both of Cortland’s goals were scored by Karamia Montalvo. Montalvo’ first goal was assisted by Maude Terwilliger. 

Up next, Cortland will host Chittenango on Monday (October 4th) at 5pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. Fulton

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close game against Fulton with a score of 1-2 on Thursday. 

“I believe we outplayed Fulton tonight but came up short,” said Cortland Head Coach Luke Schweider. “Caden Albright had a late first half goal to give us momentum going into the second half. We had our opportunities; we just needed to take care of the ball in the attacking third. We worked hard and played well as a team. We are focused on fixing what we need in order to get better moving forward.”

Cortland’s only goal was scored by Caden Albright. 

Cortland goalkeeper Scott Hourigan made a total of 4 saves in the game. 

The Tigers’ next game is against ESM (East Syracuse Minoa) on Tuesday (October 5th) at 6:30pm on the road. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: McGraw vs. DeRuyter

The McGraw Eagles lost 1-3 against DeRuyter, bringing them down to a 4-7 record. 

Nolan Knickerbocker made 14 total saves at goal throughout the game for the Eagles, while DeRuyter’s goalie Wesley Pforter made 5 saves. 

McGraw’s only goal of the game was scored by Nathan Stiles in the second half. 

DeRuyter’s offense was led by Elliott Millett (1 goal), Andrew Glisson (1 goal), Lenny Escobar (1 goal), Josiah Hannafan (1 assist), Justin Foster (1 assist), Gavin Richardson (1 assist). 

Up next, the Eagles will take on Stockbridge Valley on Tuesday (October 5th) at 4:30pm on the road. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Red Creek

The Cincinnatus Lions defeated Red Creek 7-1 on Thursday. With this win, the Lions improved their undefeated record to 9-0. 

Cason Stafford led the Lions with 3 goals & 3 assists. Following Stafford were Scott Schuyler (3 goals & 1 assist), Jordan Larrabee (1 goal & 1 assist), and Dominick Landers (1 assist). 

Cincinnatus’ next challenge will be against Marathon on Friday (October 1st) at 4:30pm on the road. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Marathon vs. Odessa Montour

The Marathon Olympians improved to a 7-1-2 record after defeating Odessa Montour with a score of 8-2 on Thursday. 

According to Marathon Head Coach Chip Stewart, Marathon “took control of the second half with a 4 goal output.” 

Marathon was led by Braeden Morrison (4 goals), Connor Holland (1 goal & 1 assist), Bryce Howe (2 goals), Eli Hoyt (1 goal), Kaiden Cornell (2 assists), and Bryce Hartman (1 assist). 

The Olympians are now scheduled to host Cincinnatus on Friday (October 1st) at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Golf: Homer vs. Chittenango

The Homer Trojans played their last match of the regular season against Chittenengo on Thursday, in which they came out victorious with a score of 204-223. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins). 

The Trojans ended their regular season with an 11-4 record

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Cortland vs. Central Square

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost to Central Square in four sets, bringing their record to 4-4 overall. 

Cortland was led by Aliza McCormick (4 aces. 8 kills & 16 digs), Molly Steve (14 assists & 7 digs), and Kristin Rowland (26 digs). 

Central Square was led by Jaliynn Patchen (8 kills), Audrey Tetrault (7 aces & 20 assists), and Sophia Lamb (2 kills & 16 digs). 

Cortland’s next game will be against Homer at home on Monday (October 4th) at 6:30pm.

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. ITC

The Homer Lady Trojans improved to a 6-3 record after defeating ITC (Institute of Technology Central, Syracuse) in four sets on Thursday. 

The Trojans were led by Mya Updyke (11 assists), Madison Wethje (9 assists), and Kayla Miller (7 kills & 4 digs). 

ITC was led by Sydney Blanchard (11 digs) and Samantha McGiveron (1 kill, 1 assist & 5 digs). 

The Trojans will be taking on Cortland on the road on Monday (October 4th) at 6:30pm.
