Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 1st)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Football: Cortland vs. ITC

The Cortland Purple Tigers suffered an unfortunate 12-40 loss against ITC (Institute of Technology Central, Syracuse) on Friday. 

Both of Cortland’s touchdowns were scored by Gaven Truman (9 yard reception pass from quarterback Ryan Kline and a 92 yard interception return). 

With this loss, Cortland is now 0-4 overall. 

The Tigers will look to turn things around next week, as they play against Marcellus at home on Friday (October 8th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Football: Homer vs. South Jefferson

The Homer Trojans took down South Jefferson with a score of 61-6 to improve their unbeaten record to 4-0. 

Homer’s touchdowns were scored by David Morse (3 rushing touchdowns), Sam Sorenson (2 rushing touchdowns), Jeffrey Stauber (2 rushing touchdowns), Will Dady (1 reception touchdown/pass from quarterback Jake Calabro), and Jake Calabro (1 rushing touchdown). 

David Morse had a total of 134 rushing yards, while Jeffrey Stauber ran for 133 yards and Will Dady recorded 61 yards in 2 receptions. 

The Trojan’s defense was led by Dady (9 tackles) and Hunter Riehlman (7 tackles & 1 interception). 

The Trojans will look to improve their unbeaten record, as they travel to play Westhill on the road on Friday (October 8th) at 6:30pm.  

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Trumansburg

The Marathon Lady Olympians came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat Trumansburg 4-2 on Friday. With this win, the Olympians are now 9-2 on the season. 

“I felt like we possessed the ball really well,” said Marathon Head Coach Elizabeth Duncan. “I knew that if we kept the pressure on we would finally capitalize. After our loss at home on Wednesday, I was curious to see how we would respond. Our kids stepped up and played a solid game, especially defensively. We held Trumansburg to no corner kicks, and the ball remained in our offensive end the majority of the time.”

Marathon was led by Brooke Tillotson (3 goals), Delta Barber (1 goal), and Abby Ensign (2 assists). 

Marathon goalkeeper Kendre Euson made 3 saves in the game. 

Up next, Marathon will play against Moravia on the road on Monday (October 4th) at 4:30pm.  

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Marathon

The Cincinnatus Lions won a close game against Marathon on Friday 2-1 to improve their unbeaten record intact. The Lions are now 10-0 on the season, and Marathon is 7-2-2 overall. 

Both of Cincinnatus’ goals were scored by Jack Stafford (assisted by Koda Temple & Scott Schuyler). 

Marathon’s only goal of the game was scored by Kaiden Cornell (assisted by Jacob Byron). 

Cincinnatus will take on DeRuyter at home on Thursday (October 7th) at 4:30pm, while Marathon plays  Whitney Point on the road at 4:30pm on Thursday (October 7th). 

Varsity Boys Golf: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Auburn with an overall score of 195-229. (Reminder: lowest score in golf wins).
