Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 5th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cincinnatus vs. Otselic Valley

The Cincinnatus varsity girls soccer team shutout Otselic Valley with a score of 14-0 in order to improve to an 11-1 overall record. 

Cincinnatus was led by Kyla Sustad (7 goals), Peyton Stith (2 goals), Jarisa Temple (1 goal & 1 assist), Cassia Schuyler (1 goal & 1 assist), Madelyn Pittsley (1 goal), Mandi Waltz (1 goal), Ava Larrabee (1 goal), Jamber Aiken (1 assist), and Emma Finch (1 assist). 

Cincinnatus’ next game will be against DeRuyter on the road at 4:30pm on Thursday (October 7th). 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Marathon vs. Union Springs

The Marathon Lady Olympians improved to an 11-2 record after defeating Union Springs 4-1 on Tuesday. 

Marathon’s offense was led by Lindsay Courtney (2 goals), Paige Hurlburt (1 goal & 1 assist), Delta Barber (1 goal), Addison Oram (1 assist), and Marissa Allen (1 assist). 

Marathon goalkeeper Kendre Euson made 3 saves in the game, while Union Springs goalie Danielle Waldron made 15 saves. 

Marathon will play their next game at home on Thursday (October 7th) against Groton at 4:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. ESM

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost 0-9 against a strong ESM (East Syracuse Minoa) team on Tuesday. Cortland is now 5-4 on the season. 

Cortland goalkeeper Lauren Mott made 19 saves in the game. 

ESM was led by Leah Rehm (4 goals), Ashley Praxl (2 goals), Jazzel Meikleham (1 goal), Angelina Polcaro (1 goal), and Natalie Peterson (1 goal). 

The Lady Tigers will host Oswego on Thursday (October 7th) at 6pm.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Hannibal

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a close game to Hannibal with a score of 1-2, bringing Homer down to a 5-6-1 record. 

Homer’s only goal of the game was scored by Jane Gugerty (assisted by Camdyn Cole). 

Hannibal’s offense was led by Lena Turaj (1 goal) and Jenna Cole (1 goal). 

Homer goalie Catherine Apker made 7 saves in the game. 

The Lady Trojans will travel to play against CBA (Christian Brothers Academy) on Wednesday (October 6th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. ESM

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a tough game against ESM (East Syracuse Minoa) on Tuesday with a score of 1-7. 

With this loss, the Tigers are now 5-6 on the season. 

Cortland’s only goal of the game was scored by Nick Yonta in the second half. 

Scott Hourigan made a total of 19 saves for the Tigers at goal. 

ESM’s goals were scored by Behudin Malkic (2 goals), Zach Shufelt (1 goal), Garrett O'Donnell (1 goal), Joel Alvarez (1 goal), Armin Osmanovic (1 goal), and Jackson Tedesco (1 goal).

Cortland will look to bounce back on the road against Oswego on Thursday (October 7th) at 6pm. 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Skaneateles

The Homer Trojans suffered a devastating 0-11 loss against Skaneateles, bringing them down to a 2-9 record. 

Homer goalkeeper Zander Johnson ended the game with a 50% saving percentage, as he made a total of 11 saves in the game. 

Skaneateles’ goals were scored by Daniel Ramsguard (2 goals), Owen Cheney (2 goals), Aidan Donovan (2 goals), Tylar Moss (2 goals), Wyatt Langford (1 goal), Marty McNeil (1 goal), and Nick Cerimeli (1 goal). 

Up next, the Trojans will play Cortland on the road at 12pm (noon) on Saturday (October 9th). 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. Phoenix

The Homer Lady Trojans defeated Phoenix at home on Tuesday in three straight sets to improve to an 8-3 overall record. 

Homer was led by Mya Updyke (4 kills, 22 assists & 2 digs), Kayla Miller (3 aces, 9 kills & 3 digs), and Mallory Douglass (13 digs). 

Phoenix was led by Olivia Edwards (2 aces, 1 kill & 10 assists) and Chloe Coughlin (10 digs). 

Up next, the Trojans will travel to play Hamilton on Thursday (October 7th) at 6pm.
