Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 14th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Thursday’s events:

Varsity Girls Soccer: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Lady Trojans lost a tough outing against Mexico with a score of 1-2 on Thursday. With this loss, the Trojans ended the regular season with an overall record of 6-9-1. 

Homer’s lone goal of the game was scored by Sarah Sovocool (assisted by Camdyn Cole) in the first half. 

Mexico’s goals were scored by Grace O'Gorman and Lilly Duschen. 

Catherine Apker made a total of 13 saves for Homer at goal, while Mexico’s goalkeeper Briana Urquhart made 8 saves. 

According to the Section III website, there will be a seeding meeting on Sunday (October 17th), and Homer will find out who their first Sectional opponent will be afterwards.

Varsity Girls Soccer: Cortland vs. Jamesville-Dewitt

The Cortland Lady Tigers lost 0-4 against Jamesville-Dewitt on Thursday, bringing their overall record to 8-5. 

Lauren Mott made a total of 8 saves at goal for the Tigers in the game, while Jamesville-Dewitt goalies’ Lauren Parker and Emily Bulone combined for 13 saves. 

Jamesville-Dewitt’s offense was led by Megan Baker (3 goals), Brooke Bort (1 goal & 1 assist), Nina Dermody (1 assist), Sydney Balotin (1 assist), and Caroline Stone (1 assist). 

Cortland’s next game will be played at home against Auburn at 10am on Saturday (October 16th). 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Cortland vs. Jamesville-Dewitt

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a tough game against Jamesville-Dewitt with a score of 0-2 on Thursday. The Tigers are currently 7-8 overall. 

Cortland goalkeeper Scott Hourigan made a total of 12 saves in the game. 

Jamesville Dewitt’s offense was led by Kyan Barbuto (1 goal), Max MacCaull (1 goal), Sam Bobrek (1 assist), Jake Mone (1 assist). 

Up next, the Tigers will host Central Square at noon on Saturday (September 16th). 

Varsity Boys Soccer: Homer vs. Jordan Elbridge

The Homer Trojans won their last game of the season with an overall score of 3-1 giants Jordan-Elbridge. 

Homer was led by Braydon Fox (1 goal), Marcus Sypher (1 goal), Zander Johnson (1 goal), Adam Karam (2 assists), and Ray Meng (1 assists). 

Homer goalkeepers Braydon Fox and Evan Butts combined for a total of 9 saves in the game. Fox had 5 saves and Butts made 4 saves.

The Trojans ended the season with an overall record of 3-10-1. 

Varsity Girls Volleyball: Homer vs. Westhill

The Homer Lady Trojans lost in three sets to Westhill on the road on Thursday. Following the loss, Homer’s overall record stands at 8-5 overall. 

Homer was led by Kloey Roos (8 kills & 6 digs), Mallory Douglass (12 digs), and Mya Updyke (7 assists). 

Westhill was led by Ava Baty (5 aces, 22 assists & 5 digs), Kate Heinrich (16 kills & 5 digs), and Tori Militi (3 assists & 9 digs). 

Up next, the Lady Trojans will look to bounce back at the Marcellus Varsity Girls' Volleyball Tournament on Saturday (October 16th). The Tournament is scheduled to begin at 8am at Marcellus’ Middle School gym.
