The #1 seeded Marathon Olympians took down Hunter Tannersville (9th seed) in the Quarterfinals of the Section IV Class D Sectional Tournament with a score of 6-0 on Friday.

The Olympians took over the game in the first half, outscoring Hunter Tannersville 5-0.

“I thought we moved the ball really well, especially in the first half,” said Marathon Head Coach Chip Stewart. “We were complacent in the second half, but that's because the field was slippery and no one wanted to get hurt.”

The Olympians closed the game out after scoring a second half goal, and with their defense not leaving Hunter Tannersville any room for a comeback.

“Defensively, I like what we're doing,” stated Coach Stewart. “We kept the shutout today, which is the kind of thing we preach.”

Marathon’s offense was led by Braeden Morrison (4 goals & 1 assist), Conor Holland (2 goals), Ethan Morrison (1 assist), and Brittan Keller (1 assist).

With this win, the Olympians are heading into a semifinal matchup against Cherry Valley-Springfield (4th seed) on Thursday (October 28th). The game is scheduled to be played at the Wright Soccer Complex in Oneonta at 3:15pm.

Marathon has gone to the semifinal round of the sectional tournament every year since the 2016 season.

“We can play with anybody, and then we can lose to anybody,” said Coach Stewart. “We have a couple of nice players, but we have to find other ways to score with the roster we have.”

“I like our chances (in the semifinals) and beyond,” Coach Stewart then added.
