Cortland County High School Sports Recaps (October 22nd & 23rd)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s and Saturday’s events:

October 22nd

Varsity Football: Homer vs. Marcellus

The Homer Trojans ended their regular season with an undefeated record of 6-0, after defeating Marcellus on the road with a score of 55-26. 

All of Homer’s points were scored in the first half of the game by Sam Sorenson 2 rushing touchdowns, 1 interception return & 1 fumble return). Will Dady (1 rushing touchdown), David Morse (1 rushing touchdown), Hunter Riehlman (1 rushing touchdown), and Jeffrey Stauber (1 rushing touchdown). 

Offensively, the Trojans were led by David Morse (132 rushing yards) and Sam Sorenson (108) rushing yards. 

Homer’s defense was led by Tayvn Malchak (8 tackes), Sam Sorenson (5 tackes, 1 interception & 1 fumble recovery), and Hunter Riehlman (5 tackes). 

Up next, the Trojans will wait to see who their upcoming sectional tournament rival will be. According to Section III, there is a seeding meeting on Sunday (October 24th) to determine who Homer goes against in the first round. 

Varsity Football: Cortland vs. South Jefferson

The Cortland Purple Tigers ended their season on a high note and won their first game of the season on Friday with a score of 14-7. 

Cortland’s touchdowns were scored by Mark Darling (rushing touchdown) and Luke Darling (Rushing touchdown). 

Luke Darling also ran in for a 2-point play.

This was the Tigers’ last game of the season, ending it with an overall record of 1-6. 

Varsity Boys Soccer (Sectionals): Cortland vs. ESM

The #8 seeded Cortland Purple Tigers lost a tough game to the #1 seed ESM (East Syracuse Minoa) with a score of 0-7 in the quarterfinals of the Section III Class A Sectional Tournament. 

“Cortland played with pride in the sectional quarterfinal,” said Cortland Head Coach Luke Schweider. “They worked hard the entire game and finished strong for each other. Our guys stepped up to the challenge of playing ESM and never gave up. I am extremely proud of how far this team came. They surpassed the expectations for the season. They should be proud of themselves for what they have accomplished.”

Scott Hourigan made a total of 18 saves at goal for Cortland. 

The Tigers ended their season with an 8-9 record. 

Varsity Boys Soccer (Sectionals): Cincinnatus vs. Town of Webb

The #1 seeded Cincinnatus Lions defeated the Town of Webb (9th seed) with a score of 8-0 in the Quarterfinal round of the Section III Class D Sectional Tournament on Friday.

Up next, the Lions will play against DeRuyter (4th seed) in the Sectional Semifinals on Wednesday (October 27th). The game is scheduled to kickoff at Mexico High School (neutral site) at 5pm.

Varsity Boys Soccer (Sectionals): Marathon vs. Hunter Tannersville

The #1 seeded Marathon Olympians defeated Hunter Tannersville (9th seed) in the Quarterfinals of the Section IV Class D Sectional Tournament with a score of 6-0 on Friday.

Update: Up next, the Olympians are heading into a semifinal matchup against Cherry Valley-Springfield (4th seed) on Thursday (October 28th). The game is scheduled to be played at the Wright Soccer Complex in Oneonta at 3:15pm.

October 23rd

Varsity Girls Soccer (Sectionals): Marathon vs. Downsville

The #1 seeded Marathon Lady Olympians defeated Downsville (8th seed) with a score of 5-1 in the quarterfinal round of the Section IV Class D Sectional Tournament on Saturday.

Up next, Marathon will play in the sectional semifinals against Franklin (4th seed) on Wednesday (October 27th) at the Wright Soccer Complex in Oneonta. The time of the game is yet to be announced.
