Your Cortland County weather forecast for Thursday, December 9, 2021:
Today will be a quiet and chilly day until nighttime warm front marks the beginning of an extended period of milder weather.
Skies this morning will be rather cloudy, but a few breaks of sunshine will be possible. Low clouds from lake effect and thin clouds high in the atmosphere streaming ahead of the warm front will both be present.
A few stray snow showers may move into the area for the early morning hours as well. By the mid morning, these should move south and dissipate. No accumulation is expected.
The lake effect clouds will diminish this morning as well, but thicker clouds ahead of the warm front will continue to push in. So, the best chance for sun will be between the lake clouds this morning.
No additional precipitation is expected during the afternoon or the evening. After midnight, some snow showers associated with the warm front will move through. Again, no accumulation is expected.
Northwest winds will blow at around 5 mph into the early afternoon. The wind will then go calm for the remainder of the afternoon before turning to the southeast this evening.
Wind speeds will increase to near or above 10 mph, especially over higher elevations after midnight. Top gusts should stay near 25 mph for most areas and near 30 mph for the hilltops.
With the warming winds coming after sunset, daytime highs will only make it to near 30 degrees. After an initial drop to the mid 20s early in the evening, temperatures will start to rise, reaching the low 30s before the sun rises.
