Cortland man arrested for stabbing woman three times over money

A Cortland man was arrested Sunday afternoon after allegedly stabbing a victim three times over money Friday evening, according to a city of Cortland police department report Monday morning.

The city man, identified as Lavalle A. Caldwell, 53, of room 215 at the Econo Lodge on Church Street, allegedly stabbed the 41-year old victim twice in her right arm and once in the right side of her back. City police arrived at the victim’s Main Street residence at 7:50 p.m. on Friday.

According to the city police report, Caldwell, which the victim identified as “New York,” allegedly stabbed the victim due to her refusal to return $20 that he loaned her earlier in the day on Friday. A witness was able to identify “New York” as Caldwell.

The victim was transported to Upstate University Hospital Friday evening. She was treated for non life-threatening injuries and released shortly thereafter.

City police officially arrested Caldwell in his room at the Econolodge on Sunday at 4:30 p.m.

“We had a victim that was hospitalized, so we had to put the case together before we were able to pick him up,” City Lt. Mike Strangeway said in response to the two-day window between Caldwell’s attack and his arrest.

Caldwell was charged with first-degree attempted robbery, second-degree assault and third-degree criminal possession (all felonies).

Caldwell was remanded at the Cortland County Jail without bail. He is set to appear in city court this Thursday at 11 a.m.
