Cortland County High School Sports Recaps: Basketball & Ice Hockey (December 28th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Tuesday’s events:

Varsity Girls Basketball: Homer vs. Watkins Glen

The Homer Lady Trojans won the MBW Tournament Tuesday night after defeating Watkins Glen 65-31. 

“We played incredible team basketball these past two days…very unselfish. 19 assists in both games proves it,” said Homer head coach CJ Kudla. “We have been so unhealthy and limited these first two months of the season, and we finally have everyone back for this tournament; so it is wonderful to see all the girls back together and playing at such a high level together. I am very proud of them.”

The Trojans were led by Sarah Sovocool (16 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds & 6 steals), Catherine Apker (15 points, 6 assists, 4 rebounds & 6 steals), and Gracie Patriarco (14 points, 2 assists, 6 rebounds & 5 steals). 

Watkins Glen was led by Jenna Solomon (16 points) and Chelsea Parsons (5 points). 

Up next, the Lady Trojans will play Hannibal on the road on Tuesday (January 4th) at 6:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Cortland vs. Whitney Point

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Whitney Point with a score of 58-39 at home Tuesday night. 

With this win, the Tigers are now 6-2 overall. 

The Tigers were led by Kirsten Merritt (13 points), Claire Turner (11 points), Kendall Mack (8 points), and Valerosa Gambitta (8 points).

Up next, the Tigers will play Jamesville-Dewitt on the road on Tuesday (January 4th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: McGraw vs. Poland

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost a tough game against Poland with a score of 22-74 in the first round of the “Sports Boosters Holiday Tournament” in Fabius-Pompey.

The Eagles were led by Hailey Mccall (11 points), Heather Magee (4 points), and Hannah Wilson (4 points).

Note: individual stats for Poland were not available at the time this article was written. 

With this loss, the Eagles are now 1-2 on the season, and will take on Otselic Valley in the consolation finals of the “Sports Boosters Holiday Tournament” at 2pm today (December 29th). 

Varsity Boys Basketball: McGraw vs. Faith Heritage

The McGraw Eagles defeated Faith Heritage 42-27 in order to improve their overall record to 3-3 Tuesday night. 

The Eagles were led by Quintin Burdick (22 points) and Nick Sutton (12 points). 

Faith Heritage was led by Asher Seabrook (8 points) and Matthew Singh (7 points). 

Up next, the Eagles will take on Oriskany on the road at 7pm tonight (December 29th)

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. Poland

The Cincinnatus Lions beat Poland 58-23 in the first round of the “Sports Boosters Holiday Tournament” in Fabius-Pompey. 

“A big first quarter was the key,” said Cincinnatus head coach Jim Halstrom. “Our team defense was as good as it could have been. We didn’t even allow a shot the first few possessions, and everyone contributed offensively.”

Cincinnatus was led by Cason Stafford (15 points, 3 rebounds, 4 assists & 5 steals), Canden Stafford (15 points, 3 rebounds, 2 assists & 2 steals), Scott Schuyler (13 points, 4 assists & 3 steals), and Matt Kemp (2 rebounds, 13 assists, and 16 steals). 

Poland was led by Hunter Conklin (5 points), Gavin Krauciunas (3 points), Nate Baumes (3 points), and Ryan Calhoun (3 points), and Nathan Draper (3 points). 

With this win, the Lions improved to a 6-1 record, and have advanced to the tournament finals that will be played against Fabius-Pompey at 7pm tonight (December 29th)

Varsity Ice Hockey: Cortland-Homer vs. Mohawk Valley

The Cortland-Homer Golden Eagles defeated Mohawk Valley 12-2 in the first round of the “Holiday Tournament” held at the JM McDonald Sports Complex Tuesday night. 

The Eagles were led by Chris Yang (4 goals & 1 assist), Andrew Partigianoni (2 goals & 5 assists), Tanner Douglass (2 goals & 3 assists), Reagan Hillman (1 goal & 1 assist), Mitchell Riter (1 goal & 2 assists), Lucas Farris (1 goal & 1 assist), Logan Goodman (1 goal & 1 assist), Braden Marsh (3 assists), Logan Swartz (2 assists), Ryan Spaulding (2 assists), and Riley Delage (1 assist). 

Mohawk Valley was led by Jaiden Lawrence (2 goal)s, Luke Williams (1 assist), and Sean Graziano (1 assist)
