Cortland Weather Outlook: Friday, December 31

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Friday, December 31, 2021:

The year will come to a close in a fitting manner as plenty of clouds and some rain showers once again are in the forecast.

Another small wave of atmospheric energy will travel along the jet stream and through our area. Overcast skies are expected throughout the day, accompanied by some occasional light rain showers.

The best chance for rain will be during the latter half of the morning and into the midday hours. If any glimpses of sun make a brief appearance, that will most likely come in the afternoon.

One change from the last couple days will be the development of a southerly breeze. With speeds of 5-10 mph, this breeze will reduce the fog and drizzle and give temperatures a small boost.

Look for highs this afternoon to reach the low and mid 40s. Temperatures will retreat to the mid 30s for a short time this evening, then rise again overnight.

By midnight, temperatures will be approaching 40, and by Saturday morning, temperatures should be in the mid 40s.

The wind will remain steady through the night, but it will not be overly gusty. A stray shower cannot be ruled out at the changing of the year, but for the most part, it will be a dry and quiet evening.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Saturday: Cloudy with periods of rain. Morning lows in the mid 40s. Afternoon highs in the upper 40s.

Sunday: A few early rain showers turning to flurries. Breezy with falling temperatures. Morning temperatures in the upper 30s. Afternoon temperatures in the upper 20s.

Monday: Morning lake effect snow. Some sun possible late. Morning lows in the mid teens. Afternoon highs in the mid 20s.

Tuesday: Clouds and some sun. Morning lows in the upper teens. Afternoon highs in the upper 30s.
