Cortland Weather Outlook: Wednesday, January 5

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Wednesday, January 5, 2022:

It will be another quiet day today but a cold front tonight will bring a little activity into the region.

A deck of overcast high in the atmosphere will remain in place throughout the morning hours. The sun may be able to filter through the clouds somewhat, but for the most part it will just be cloudy.

The clouds will break up some this afternoon, even as new clouds lower in the atmosphere develop. The afternoon will therefore be a mix of sunnier periods and cloudier ones.

South winds will blow steadily at near or just over 10 mph. Gusts could approach 30 mph in the hills of the northern part of the county.

Any sun that comes out should help the south winds get temperatures into the low 40s this afternoon. If enough sun works out, some mid 40s are possible.

A cold front will move in this evening. Some brief snow squalls will be possible with the front. These will not put down much accumulation but could make for some windows of tricky travel. Most of the squally weather should move out before midnight.

Winds will turn to the southwest behind the front with speeds staying around 10 mph. Temperatures will stick close to 30 this evening, but will end up closer to 20 overnight.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Thursday: Some sun early. Then increasing clouds with nighttime snow possible. Morning lows near 20. Afternoon highs in the low 30s.

Friday: Lake effect flurries and squalls. Breezy with blowing snow possible. Morning temperatures in the low 20s. Afternoon temperatures around 20.

Saturday: A mix of sun and clouds. Morning lows in the low 10s. Afternoon highs in the upper 20s.

Sunday: Wintry mix of precipitation, ending as rain late. Morning lows in the low 20s. Afternoon highs in the mid 30s.
