Cortland County High School Sports Recaps: Basketball & Volleyball (January 7th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Friday’s events:

Varsity Girls Basketball: Marathon vs. Newfield

The Marathon Lady Olympians improved to a 7-2 record after defeating Newfield 86-18 at home Friday night. 

The Olympians were led by Brooke Tillotson (30 points), Addison Oram (14 points), Abigail Ensign (13 points), Anna Hoyt (12 points), Bailee Hurlburt (9 points), Paige Hurlburt (6 points), and Kendre Euson (2 points). 

Newfield was led by Ella McCoy (5 points) and Emily Dunn (5 points). 

Up next, the Lady Olympians are scheduled to host Odessa Montour Central on Friday (January 14th) at 6pm.

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. Auburn

The Cortland Purple Tigers lost a close game against Auburn with a score of 46-39. 

The Tigers were led by Max Gambitta (12 points, 8 rebounds, 2 assists & 1 steal), Emerson Johnson (12 points, 7 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 block & 2 steals), and Marvin Bell (5 point, 8 rebounds, 3 assists, 1 block & 1 steal). 

Auburn was led by DeSean Strachan (25 points) and Kevin Dolan (10 points). 

With this loss, the Purple Tigers have fallen to a 5-4 record. 

Up next, Cortland will host Central Square on Tuesday (January 11th) at 6:45pm.  

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Newfield

The Marathon Olympians lost a tight game against Newfield (57-60) on the road Friday night. 

With this loss, Marathon now holds a 2-5 record. 

The Olympians were led by Conor Holland (39 points), Braeden Morrison (6 points), and Eli Hoyt (6 points). 

Newfield was led by Jaden Hardison (30 points) and Derek Pantewicz (13 points). 

Marathon’s next game will be against Groton on the road this upcoming Wednesday (January 12th) at 7:30pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Homer vs. Chittenango

The Homer Trojans lost to Chittenango 25-72. 

Homer was led by Jon Barnes (7 points), Reid Partis (6 points), and Evan Butts (5 points). 

Chittenango was led by Bryce Bishop (17 points), Alex Moesch (17 points), and Tyrus Kelly (10 points). 

With the loss, Homer has fallen to a 2-5 record. 

Homer’s next game will be played today (January 8th) on the road against Westhill at 11am. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: McGraw vs. Otselic Valley

The McGraw Eagles lost a tough game to Otselic Valley with a score of 38-43.

With this loss, the Eagles are now 3-6 overall, and will take on Cincinnatus on the road this upcoming Monday (January 10th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Volleyball: McGraw vs. Faith Heritage

The McGraw Lady Eagles lost to Faith Heritage after three sets Friday night.

With this loss, the Eagles are now 0-7 overall, and will host Stockbridge Valley on Thursday (January 13th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Tully

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions lost to Tully after four sets on Friday.

With this loss, Cincinnatus now holds a 2-4 overall record.
