Cortland Weather Outlook: Monday, January 17

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Monday, January 17, 2022:

A sloppy winter storm will continue to impact the area throughout the day today.

Mixed precipitation will continue this morning, likely tapering off in intensity for a time as dry air wraps into the parent low pressure system to our east.

Temperatures during this time will climb into the low or even mid 30s. Combined with the decrease in precipitation intensity, this should give road crews a chance to get at least the main roads in decent shape. Lesser treated rural roads may remain hazardous, though.

Of course, before heading out for any non-essential travel, be sure to analyze the current road and weather conditions and consider not traveling to make it easier for the road crews and those who have no choice but to be on the roads.

Colder air will wrap around the system and into the area this afternoon. Precipitation will pick up again, now falling as mostly or all snow. The midday and early afternoon will have the heaviest snow, followed by a gradual decrease in snow intensity.

Several more inches will fall this afternoon and roads will become slick again as temperatures drop back below freezing.

Widespread precipitation will wind down shortly after sunset at the same time that winds will pick up. Northwest winds will gust over 30 mph at times, causing areas of blowing and drifting snow.

Scattered lake effect snow showers and a few squalls will also be possible throughout the evening and overnight. Locally another inch or two could accumulate.

Nighttime temperatures will fall back through the 20s and into the mid teens by sunrise Tuesday.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Tuesday: Early lake effect snow showers. Maybe some late sun. Morning lows in the mid 10s. Afternoon highs in the upper 10s.

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy. A few late flurries. Morning lows near 20. Afternoon highs in the mid 30s.

Thursday: A few lake effect flurries. Morning temperatures in the mid 10s. Afternoon temperatures in the low 10s.

Friday: A few morning lake effect flurries. Then possibly some sun. Morning lows 0 to -5. Afternoon highs in the upper 0s.
