Cortland Weather Outlook: Tuesday, January 18

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Tuesday, January 18, 2022:

Following the departure of yesterday’s winter storm, we are settling back into a pattern of minor lake effect and occasional shots of cold.

For today, both lake effect and cold air are on the docket.

The best chance for snow showers off Lake Ontario will come through the morning hours. The later in the day it gets, the fewer flurries there should be left.

Snow accumulations will be on the order of an inch or less for most areas, though a localized amount up to two inches will be possible if a more intense snow showers remains in place long enough.

This afternoon, skies will remain rather cloudy, but some breaks of sunshine will try to work through. Skies will become mostly clear after sunset, only to have new clouds work in from the west during the course of the evening.

Northwest winds will continue to be blustery with speeds of 10-15 mph and gusts to 35 mph. The strongest winds will persist through the morning and into the early afternoon before dissipating late in the day.

With the wind, areas of blowing and drifting snow will be possible.

Temperatures will hold steady most of the day, hovering just under 20 degrees. Once the sun sets, it will be a quick drop into the single digits. A few areas could even dip below zero by midnight.

By then, south winds will take over and increase to around 10 mph. Warmer air will start to move in and temperatures will be all the way back into the low 20s by sunrise.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Wednesday: Mostly cloudy. A few late flurries. Morning lows in the low 20s. Afternoon highs in the upper 30s.

Thursday: Snow showers. Morning an afternoon temperatures steady in the mid 10s.

Friday: A few morning lake effect flurries. Then possibly some sun. Morning lows 0 to -5. Afternoon highs in the low 10s.

Saturday: Cloudy. Perhaps some snow. Morning lows 0 to +5. Afternoon highs near 20.
