Cortland Weather Outlook: Friday, January 21

Your Cortland County weather forecast for Friday, January 21, 2022:

One of the colder days so far this year, and certainly one of the coldest nights, awaits Cortland County today.

Arctic high pressure northwest of the region will keep a fresh supply of cold air in place today. Skies will be mostly sunny beneath the high, with the best chance for a few lingering lake effect clouds coming this morning.

Light north winds will blow at around 5 mph throughout the day. Top gusts will be under 15 mph.

Daytime highs will only manage to get to around 10 degrees despite the sunshine.

Ideal cooling conditions are expected tonight with clear skies, nearly calm winds, an extremely dry atmosphere, and a cold snowpack.

It will not take long after sunset for subzero temperatures to begin appearing. Nighttime cooling will continue rapidly with overnight lows, without any windchill factoring in, of -15 to -20 degrees.

The nearly calm winds overnight means the wind chill will be close to the actual temperature.

Here is a look at the weather for the next several days:

Saturday: Morning sun. Increasing afternoon clouds. Morning lows -15 to -20. Afternoon highs in the upper 10s.

Sunday: Maybe a few lake effect flurries. Mostly cloudy otherwise. Morning lows near 10. Afternoon highs in the low 20s.

Monday: Mostly cloudy. A few late snow showers. Morning lows -5 to -10. Afternoon highs near 20.

Tuesday: Cloudy with snow showers. Morning temperatures in the low 30s. Afternoon temperatures in the mid 20s.
