Cortland County High School Sports Recaps: Volleyball & Basketball (January 24th)

Here are some local high school varsity sports recaps from Monday’s events:

Varsity Volleyball: McGraw vs. Manlius-Pebble Hill (MPH)

The McGraw Lady Eagles hosted senior night against Manlius-Pebble Hill (MPH), where they won in five sets. 

The six seniors that were recognized during last night’s match were Jennifer Curtis, Jaiden Cortez, McKenzie Fuller, Tehya Long, Marta Kostiuk, and Abigail Morse. 

“This team has not been together until this past week due to injury, illness, covid and now that they are all together they are playing amazing,” said McGraw head coach Jessyca Doran. “I am so proud of all of them for sticking together, never giving up and fighting to the end.”

McGraw was led by Jennifer Curtis (3 kills, 2 digs & 7 aces), Megan Stull (2 kills, 5 digs & 8 aces), and Madison Lawrence (4 kills & 6 blocks).

MPH was led by Lyv Brundin (17 kills, 3 assists & 2 aces) and Kate Chaffee (11 kills, 5 digs, 27 assists & 5 aces). 

This was McGraw’s last scheduled regular season game. They ended the season with a 2-9 overall record. 

Varsity Volleyball: Cincinnatus vs. Faith Heritage

The Cincinnatus Lady Lions defeated Faith Heritage in three sets Monday night. 

With this win, Cincinnatus improved their record to 4-5 overall.

Cincinnatus’ next match will be on the road against Stockbridge Valley this Wednesday (January 26th) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cincinnatus vs. Brookfield

The Cincinnatus Lions defeated Brookfield 61-39 on the road Thursday night. Cincinnatus has been ranked #7 in the state for Class D since January 18th.

With this win, the Lions improved their overall record to 10-1. 

“We played the first three quarters with great defensive intensity, and were able to get out and score in transition,” said Cincinnatus Head Coach Jim Halstrom. 

“Offensively, as a group we need to continue to work on some things,” added Coach Halstrom. “I’m really pleased with what we accomplished tonight. Brookfield is always well coached and it’s just a tough place to play.” 

The Lions were led by Scott Schuyler (26 points) and Cason Stafford (12 points). 

Brookfield was led by Spencer Warner (16 points) and Kaden Ondrako (14 points).

Up next, Cincinnatus will play against Madison on the road this upcoming Monday (January 31st) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Cortland vs. Fowler

The Cortland Purple Tigers defeated Fowler with a score of 47-39 in order to improve their overall record to 9-5. 

The Tigers were led by Tyler Blake (15 points, 8 rebounds & 2 steals), Max Gambitta (13 points, 2 rebounds, 7 assists & 3 steals), and Marvin Bell (8 points, 10 rebounds & 3 assists). 

Fowler was led by Michael Robinson (14 points) and Spencer Wellington (12 points). 

Up next, Cortland will take on Jamesville-Dewitt on the road this Friday (January 28th) at 6:45pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: McGraw vs. Madison

The McGraw Eagles lost a tough game against Madison with a score of 54-64 Monday night. 

The Eagles were led by Quintin Burdick (20 points) and Nick Sutton (10 points). 

Madison was led by Ethan Rivers (21 points) and Hayden Dumas (16 points). 

With this loss, McGraw has fallen to an overall record of 4-8. 

McGraw’s next game will be on the road against Onondaga on Monday (January 31st) at 7pm. 

Varsity Boys Basketball: Marathon vs. Tully

The Marathon Olympians lost 39-61 against Tully Monday night. 

The Olympians were led by Conor Holland (23 points) and Jonathan Forrest (5 points). 

Tully was led by Tom Maley (17 points) and Daniel Mech (12 points). 

With this loss, Marathon has fallen to a 3-9 record. 

Up next, Marathon will take on Tioga Senior on the road this Friday (January 28th) at 7:30pm. 

Varsity Girls Basketball: Homer vs. Mexico

The Homer Lady Trojans beat Mexico 57-44 at home in order to improve to an 11-2 overall record. 

The Lady Trojans were led by Sarah Sovocool (13 points, 6 rebounds & 6 assists), Kayla Miller (10 points, 7 rebounds & 3 steals),  Catherine Apker (8 points, 5 rebounds, 5 assists & 6 steals), and Keira Miller (8 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist & 1 steal).

Homer’s next game will be at home against Hannibal next Tuesday (February 1st) at 6:30pm.
